Central Tagging June 14

Central Tagging changed to June 21st from 7:00 am – 10:00 am in the Ext. Office Parking Lot.

  1. Families with market animals not present at Central Tagging on June 8th will be charged a $50 farm visit and $10/tag which is payable up front which will be charged in 2025.
    Feeder Calves: Your feeder calf must be present at tagging, EVEN if your animal already has an EID tag.
  2. Feeder calves will also receive a vaccine – cost is $2.00.
  3. Swine:  Your animal must be present at tagging, EVEN if your animal already has an EID tag.
  4. Rabbits:  All rabbits in possession (breeding and roasters) will come to Central Tagging.
  5. Sheep & Goats: Only market sheep and market goats
  6. Poultry:  Poultry does not come to tagging
  7. Essay Lambs and Pig Catch do not need to attend as they were already tagged at pick up.

2025 ESSAY LAMB

      • NEW: Must attend project clinic on Tuesday April 15th at 6:30 pm at Fairview Elementary.
      • This will also count for Livestock Quality Assurance requirement.
      • Siblings are welcome to attend for credit.

 

    1. Open to 4-H members when child is age 8 AND in third grade, or when child who is age 9 or above regardless of grade level.  Also open to FFA members.       
    2. New Sheep Projects Only: Entrants who have shown sheep at the Defiance County Fair in previous years are not eligible.
    3. Entrants must be able to provide facilities to house and feed a lamb.

Entrants must be enrolled in a Defiance County 4-H Club or FFA Chapter and enrolled in a Lamb Project.

  1. Must complete Quality Assurance and a Livestock Skill-a-thon.
  2. Must show the lamb at the County Fair the same year. Essay winners from previous years are ineligible
  3. Essay Length:  Minimum of 100 Words  “Why do you want to take a sheep project to the Fair?”
  4. Essay must include member name and age. Essays must also be signed at the bottom by the entrant and parent/guardian.

General Information

  1. The Lamb Essay is under the guidance of the Fairview Young Farmers. A limited number of lambs will be given out.  Selection will be based on essay content.
  2. Fairview Young Farmers transfers all liability associated with the animal to the winner at the time of pick up. In the event the animal dies, Fairview Young Farmers will not replace the animal or allow the winner to re-enter the competition the following year.
  3. Winners will be notified in writing and given a date/location to pick up lamb.
  4. Members will enter the Lamb Essay class at the Defiance County Junior Fair and are eligible for all premiums. Must meet the minimum weight 90 pounds to be eligible to show at the Fair.
  5. The grand champion market lamb class will be comprised of the division winners from the market lamb and essay lamb classes.

  • To become a member, individuals must complete an application process.

County Awards:

Defiance County Silver Tray  (ages 16+)   are presented to 4-H members, who have excelled in the home economics project areas.  Home Economic Project Areas:  Family Life, Child Care, Citizenship, Leadership, Health & Safety, Home Decorating, Home Equipment, Food, and Clothing.


Award Trip Opportunities:

Citizenship Washington Focus (High School) Teens will learn about government, national events, national landmarks, citizenship and personal responsibility. Participants will stay at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda.

State 4-H Leadership Camp (ages 15+) Teens will participate in a wide variety of programs on leadership skills, communication, and culture at 4-H Camp Ohio.

State 4-H Sea Camp (ages 15+) Held on Kelleys Island. Campers learn about one of Ohio’s most important resources: Lake Erie! You’ll be in, on, and around the water as you explore the science of the lake, learn marine‐ related skills, and discover the history and recreational uses of our great lake.


State Achievement Awards:

These awards recognize achievements in specific 4-H project areas. Areas include: Beef, Citizenship & Community Service, Creative Arts, Clothing & Textiles, Communications, Companion Animals, Dairy, Environmental Sciences, Family Life & Child Development, Foods & Nutrition, Gardening & Horticulture, Health & Safety, Horse, Leadership, Goats, Llama Mechanical Engineering Sciences, Personal Development, Photography, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, Shooting Sports, Swine, Woodworking, and Veterinary Science.  Award recipients receive a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.

Defiance County 4-H Endowment & Teen Leader Scholarship:
The Defiance County 4-H Advisory Council – Endowment Committee will select a recipient from the applications that meet the mandatory criteria.   The purpose of the scholarship program is to financially assist and reward a college-bound high school 4-H senior who intends to further his/her education.


Agricultural Scholarship: 
The Defiance County 4-H Advisory Council – Endowment Committee will select a recipient from the applications that meet the mandatory criteria.   The purpose of the scholarship program is to financially assist and reward a college-bound high school senior who intends to further his/her education in an agricultural field.: Applicant must be a current member of either Defiance County 4-H (enrolled in 2022)  OR enrolled in a Defiance County High School FFA Chapter.


4-H Alumni Scholarship:
Scholarship is for Defiance County 4-H Alumni who are currently enrolled in an accredited  college or university.  The 4-H Alumni Scholarship(s) is sponsored by the Defiance County 4-H Teen Leaders Club and will range from $250-$500.

  • Must be a Defiance County 4-H alumni (not in 4-H) at least one year post high school
  • Must be at least 19 years of age or older at time of application
  • Currently enrolled in accredited college, university or community college
  • Due: February 7, 2025
