Second Year Service Project

For my second year service project, I chose to volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  As a volunteer, my main responsibility was to prepare patients to be discharged from the hospital.  I then transported them to pick up areas to be brought home.  I also dispatched the volunteer phone where I facilitated the scheduling of patient discharges, flower deliveries, and therapy dog visits.  On weekends I was a greeter at an information desk where I helped visitors and patients navigate the hospital.  The target population was the volunteer staff, nurses, doctors, patients and their families at the hospital.  Volunteering at the hospital was transformational by providing me with exposure to a fast paced environment and the knowledge of how to work with several health care professionals.  Directly interacting with patients and their families is extremely eye opening, and it has taught me to never take good health for granted.  I loved getting to know the nursing staff on floors I visited often, and I made connections with several patients.  My role as a volunteer has given me a glimpse into the tremendous responsibility a healthcare worker has.  I have learned that a smile and a helping hand can go a long way in a settings that may be stressful or unfamiliar.

First Year Service

Over the past year at Ohio State, I have had numerous opportunities to serve the Columbus community through my part in the Health Sciences Scholars program. Last fall, I volunteered at the Steps for Sarcoma 5K as well as the Community Commitment day with my scholars peers. For Community Commitment day my group spent time cleaning up trash in a local Columbus park. I also took part in assisting classrooms with a scavenger hunt in Orton, as well as blanket tying for patients at the James Cancer Center.  Through my involvement in Universal Health Aid Columbus, I have spent time distributing flyers to advertise for our free health screenings. I also volunteered at our fall and spring screenings assuming the roles of checking patients in as well as setting up the stations. Myself and a few other HSS students volunteered for the NFL Football Draft Camp at the Historical Center by helping to check in parents and their kids. I can not wait to get more involved in the Columbus Community through service, and I thank HSS for providing these wonderful service opportunities!

Year in Review

This past year at Ohio State has been such a learning experience, and I am so thankful that I made the decision to apply for scholars. Being a part of Health Sciences Scholars, I have met some of my best friends, and I loved having a sense of community on our floor. I found it extremely beneficial to have people in similar classes and careers paths right down the hall, because we were all doing it together!  I know that taking challenging classes has pushed me as a student and will benefit me in the long run.  While I am still pursuing a health sciences degree, I am unsure of my career path.  This summer I plan to explore several different career options.  I look forward to volunteering and working this summer, and resting up before next semester. I can not wait to have a fresh start in the fall with a motivated mindset. Even though there were several late stressful nights, I had the best first year at Ohio State. All I can say is thank you to HSS for playing such a big part of it, and for a fun filled year of new friends.

About Me

Hello! My name is Annie Dean, and I am a first year majoring in health sciences. For the last year, I have been looking into dental school for post graduate studies, but I am also interested in exploring medicine. I first heard about the health sciences major after attending an Ohio State Buckeye day. There I attended an informational session held within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. I was really drawn to the health sciences major as it was described as a great stepping stone to a professional school. I am from Dublin, Ohio which is about twenty minutes away from campus. Although I live close, I am excited to take advantage of all Ohio State has to offer, and make it my new home away from home. Throughout highschool, I worked at Friendship Village of Dublin where I was a server in the main dining room. Working with residents has grown my appreciation of older generations tremendously. Work has shaped my sense of responsibility and leadership skills. I also volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital working as a discharger and phone dispatcher. I really enjoy discharging patients, especially mom’s with their newborns! I hope to continue volunteering at the hospital, and plan to apply for a position at the Wexner Medical Center. I am looking forward to starting at Ohio State, and I can’t wait to get involved in new clubs and organizations. I also am excited to utilize all the resources Ohio State has to offer to aid in the success of first year classes.
