Welcome to the DEALL 50th Anniversary website!
The DEALL-50 Anniversary Celebration scheduled for Spring 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19. Nonetheless, we went ahead with publishing the DEALL-50 Program Book for this event that would have taken place, and tweaked it slightly to serve as a Commemorative Edition. Available here as a PDF file for web access, it contains lots and lots of nifty information on the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures over the half century since its establishment. Enjoy!
In addition is the DEALL-50 Proceedings:
This volume, published through OSU’s Knowledge Bank, serves as the inaugural volume of a new series, the Buckeye East Asia: Occasional Papers. This commemorative volume contains 15 papers that included those scheduled to be presented at the International Symposium on Issues in East Asian Languages and Literatures, a symposium that was to be held on April 18, 2020, during the DEALL 50th Anniversary Celebration event. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration event was canceled. This volume was subsequently compiled from papers that were requested from among the current faculty members and the current and past doctoral students, including the symposium speakers.
Buckeye East Asia: Occasional Papers, Volume 1 (February 2022), titled, DEALL 50th Anniversary Celebration Edition: Issues in East Asian Languages and Literatures, is available online through OSU Libraries’ Knowledge Bank: https://kb.osu.edu/handle/1811/101064

Global Gallery – “Spring Celebrations in East Asia”
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we regret to inform you that the DEALL 50th anniversary celebration events on April 18th and 19th have been canceled in accordance with OSU President Drake’s message. We will, however, move forward with the Global Gallery exhibition as scheduled and publish the DEALL 50 commemorative program and proceedings. We are planning to send the commemorative program and the commemorative button to the planned participants.
The concurrent event, the 5th Workshop on Innovations in Cantonese Linguistics (WICL-5) will take place, but virtually. Professor Marjorie Chan and the Graduate Association of Chinese Linguistics members are working very hard to adjust the Workshop to a webinar setting.
We sincerely hope you and your family are healthy and well in this extraordinary circumstance. Please do take care and stay safe.
14 March 2020
We, in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL), are excited to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of DEALL’s founding at The Ohio State University. While language courses have been offered in DEALL since 1962, we became a full-fledged Ph.D. degree-offering department five decades ago in 1969-1970, one century after the founding of The Ohio State University in 1870.
Over the intervening five decades since its establishment as a department, DEALL has had numerous achievements. It has contributed to the state of Ohio, the country and the world through offering Chinese, Japanese, and Korean culture, language, linguistics, literature, and performance courses. A Ph.D. degree was offered in Chinese since 1969 and in Japanese since 1989. DEALL has a proud tradition of exceptional scholarship and a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. For instance, doctoral students have now successfully defended about 130 dissertations and gone on to many prominent positions in the field. In addition, BA and MA graduates have successful careers in the world, with many of them working in East Asia.
We invite DEALL alumni — our former graduate and undergraduate students — to join us in celebrating our 50th Anniversary. A slate of events are being planned that will take place on the OSU campus over the two-day weekend on April 18 and 19, 2020. We post the Program as it becomes available. If you are able to attend the DEALL-50 Anniversary, please fill out the Alumni Sign-Up form.
Stay tuned for more News in the coming months!
