Artifact #3
This semester I am taking my first real major courses, one being Method for Study Literature. In this class, we have to write 3 papers, each worth 25% of our grade (the other 25% being participation), which is scary. When writing this first paper, I was not very confident in my writing abilities. I thought my grammar was bad, I thought that I wasn’t being clear in my writing. But, my professor meet with everyone in the class to discuss their essays, and he was so kind to me. He told me that my writing was really good and that I wasn’t confusing at all, that actually what I thought might have been confusing, was what made me a good writer. It really boosted my confidence in my writing abilities, and I ended up getting an A- on the paper, with comments on how to improve with future papers.
Career
My career goals include two different paths. One path is working in book publishing in some capacity, and the other is to be a librarian. Both of these career goals don’t have a direct major at OSU, so I am using my freedom of classes in the English major as well as my business and communication minors to guide myself in these careers. The only classes I have taken so far that would be beneficial to my future career have been my Microsoft office class that was required to take as a business minor (a very important hard skill for my resume), Visual Communication design (which caters to the creative side of the publishing industry), and Method for Studying Literature (which is improving my analyzing skills which is beneficial for reading manuscripts). A class I am really excited to take in the future is Intro to Literary Publishing. It’s the only class that is completely geared toward publishing. Volunteering at the Columbus Metropolitan Library this year has really opened my eyes to the career of librarian, or even just working at a library. Libraries are such cool places, that I feel like most people forget about or take for granted. I am also in EUGO, which is a part of the English department, and meets once a week. That is a cool opportunity to meet more people in my major, and see what their career goals are. I think the closest thing to a mentor I have right now is my advisor. When I went to him to declare my major and minors, he was fully on board and thought it was a great combination for my career goals.
My G.O.A.L.S
Global Awareness: I plan on studying abroad at some point in my time at OSU. The English department has a class called Literary locations. In the class, you learn about a place, and its history in literature, and then that summer, go to that place. In the past, they have gone to Ireland and Italy.
Original Inquiry: It is not a current goal of mine to be involved in research, or a thesis with my English major (it is possible, but my ideal career path is not necessary and isn’t something I am interested in. However, I am very excited about my upper lover course work in the English department, and being able to take classes on social media and English as well as publication. My goal is to get an internship at a publication house.
Academic Enrichment: My goal is to graduate with a degree in English, and two minors in Business and Communication Technology. I don’t need those two majors, and without them, I could graduate early. But I wanted to be more well-rounded and put more effort into being ready to work in publishing.
Leadership: I think I want to continue with Mount as a third-year and be a Post-Mount. I want to be that third year that first and second years feel they can go to, and that they see at events.
Service Engagement: I am currently volunteering at the Columbus Library and I would love to continue that as I go through college. The library does such good things for the community, so I’d love to be a part of that in any way I can for as long as I can.
Artifact #2
This semester, I am taking a class focused on the novel and movie adaptations of Anna Karenina. This is just a GE course, fills the requirement of visual and performing arts, so it wouldn’t seem that it would be too important. However, it is probably my favorite and most impactful class. I can’t remember the last time I sat down a read a book, and genuinely enjoyed every part of it. I have made it a routine to sit and read while listening to classical music for at least an hour every day. This class is allowing my self-discipline to become a stronger trait. Also, the book itself has taught me different insights into the Russian culture of the time, as well as different ways that Russian writers wrote their stories and characters. Also, the book is just good and has lessons on life that I think anyone can take and apply to themself. This is a popular story, but I feel most people haven’t read it. I am really happy that I am reading it, and I feel like I am reading it at a meaningful point in my life.
Artifact #1
Attached to this artifact is an assignment that I have to do once a week for my International Perspectives on Media course. Every week we have to look at our international news source and report on the top news stories of the week as well as analyze the way the media source is reporting. I wouldn’t consider this an “academic success” because it doesn’t take too much time, and it is fairly easy, but this does mean a lot to me. This course is a “higher” level course, it is not a 1000 class or even 2000, it is a 3000 communication class. I was not originally taking this course, I dropped a class and needed another one, and this is the first one I saw that I thought would be interesting. I didn’t realize the course number, and that it was usually an elective that actually communication majors would take in their third and fourth years (definitely not their first). After the first class when I realized that I got a little scared, but also excited because the professor is very good at his job. He has always been a good resource and made me feel like I belong in this class with the uplifting comments on my “In the News” reports every week. We also have a group project in the class, and I am in a group with upper-level guys, all majoring in the whelm of communication or international affairs. Being in a group with them has been daunting, but I realized I have a lot to say and bring to the group as well, but I can also learn a lot from them since they have been doing the whole college thing longer than I have. In short, I have learned to not undercut my skills and abilities, and instead learn and grow, and recognize that I can do things even if I think it will be difficult.
About Me
Hello, my name is Elizabeth Davis, I prefer to go by Lizzy though. I am a first year here at The Ohio State University. I do not have a major yet, I came in undecided through the Exploratory Program, but I know that I do not want to do anything STEM related. I am from Grove City, Ohio, and I graduated from Grove City High School. I spent the majority of high school in extracurriculars such as show choir and concert Choir. But I was also a part of French Club and National Honors Society.
I don’t have a major yet, or any career ideas for that matter, but what I do know is that i want to be a part of changing the world, whether in small or big ways. That is why I wanted to be a part of Mount Leadership Society Scholars. It is such a good way to serve other people along side learning how to be a better leader, and I know that whatever I end up doing, Mount will have taught me valuable lessons to use. I am also a Morrill Scholar at OSU, and hope to become more involved with that in the future.
