My Year of Service

I had the privilege of spending 75 hours volunteering at The Boys and Girls Club (Milo-Grogan Location). I was taking the second year Mount class first semester when I began my hours. I believe that this class helped me to be more aware of the social issues that are associated with the Boys and Girls Club and made me start to think of small things I could do to help. Right from the start, I realized that we were working with underprivileged children. Many of the kids wore the same outfit every time I would go, often times covered in dirt or food. They were given boxed dinners that looked and smelled unappetizing, but many of the kids ate them without thinking twice about it. However, what bothered me the most was the poor education system that they are trapped in. I believe strongly in the quote “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” A good education is the path to teaching underprivileged children how to “fish”. There is a time slot at the Boys and Girls Club called “Power Hour” which is an hour dedicated to working on homework or reading. A positive thing that I have seen from this is that a lot of the kids are eager to learn and want to succeed. The negative part is that they have not been given the tools to do this. There have been times where I have sat down with kids who truly want to answer the questions on their homework, but they don’t know how to read the paragraph that the questions are about. As one person, I have thought about ways that I can remind the kids that learning is fun and that they should remain in school to further their education. My passion is science so I am hoping to bring a few cool experiments and hands on activities to the Boys and Girls Club from the lab that I work in. The employees of the Boys and Girls Club do an amazing job bringing in outside sources to teach about various subjects and outside opportunities, and my goal is to be a part of it!

 

Empty Bowls

The Mount Leadership Society scholars program participated in the Empty Bowls Campaign.  This entailedimg_5456 making our own bowls and selling them to make a profit.  The money was then donated to the Mid-Ohio food bank in order to provide food for struggling families and individuals.  I found this to be an amazing experience that also enhanced my academic interests.  As of now, I am determined to become a dentist in order to help people who are suffering with mouth pain.  The empty bowls experience reminded me of why I am working so hard in my classes now: to be rewarded with the great feeling of improving someone else’s life later.  To the right is a picture of the bowl I crafted and me.  It will make a great Christmas present!

G.O.A.L.S.

My sophomore year is one that has already brought new challenges and experiences.  I’m feeling more restricted on my time than last year, but the activities consuming my time are rewarding.  I spend my time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, teaching a general chemistry lab, and studying for 17 credit hours worth of classes.  What I have gotten out of these three things meets most of the G.O.A.L.S: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.  So far, my time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club has increased my leadership abilities.  I am a role model to the kids there and this pushes me to be the best leader I possibly can be.  Volunteering also falls under the category of service engagement.  Every time I’m at the Boys and Girls Club, I try to engage with the kids in a way that is beneficial.  Volunteering means nothing if you’re sitting around, unengaged.  The ESHESA class for Mount that I’m taking has taught me to be aware of what’s going on in my surroundings.  I’ve decided to download a news app on my phone so I can be more globally aware and educated on what’s going on in the world.  ESHESA, along with the other four classes I’m taking continue to enrich me academically.  I love learning new things and try to learn at least one new thing every day.  I feel that I have really excelled in “Leadership Development”.  I feel this way because being a chemistry TA has had a huge impact on my confidence and how I act around others.  I used to be afraid to take initiative and talk in front of a large amount of people.  Now that I have hurdled over my weaknesses, I talk confidently, and am a leader to the group of people that I teach.  I hope to become a dentist one day, and I truly think that my journey of leading as a chemistry TA is the first step in helping me become the type of leader that people will trust with their teeth.  In order to get to this point, I need to continue to work towards each of the G.O.A.L.S. I plan to do this while reflecting upon my experiences and evaluating which goals I’m lacking in so I can improve upon them.

High School Accomplishments

img_3778During my time at Hoover High School, I participated in many service projects.  My favorite out of these was the AGAPE Girls mentoring program.  This two year program is dedicated to giving 7th grade girls a safe place to talk about the hardships of middle school.  I had the opportunity of giving my advice and attention to a small group of eight girls.  Through mentoring my group, I learned how to be a better listener, have more effective communication skills and develop better organization strategies.  I have found that these are all things that have led to my academic success thus far at The Ohio State University.  To the right, you can see a picture of my friend and me at a senior banquet for AGAPE Girls.

Hey guys!  I’m from North Canton, Ohio, and I’m going to be a first-year at Ohio State.  During my time at Hoover High School, I was a member of Leadership Interact Club and the National Honors Society, both of which sparked my interest in joining the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program.  I spent a majority of my volunteer hours coaching 6th grade volleyball, mentoring middle schoolers and sorting food at a local food bank.  My most meaningful experience was coaching volleyball and watching the girls grow as players and people over the course of the season.  I’m in the Health Professions Exploration Program, with a specific interest in Dentistry.  While the future I envision for myself may change, I currently see myself completing an undergraduate degree and graduating from dental school.  I can be described as a type A person and kinesthetic learner.  I enjoy playing volleyball (sand or court), attending sporting events, exploring Ohio and meeting new people.
