Volunteer/ Service Acts

The first place I volunteered at was at The Crews Stadium for the Special Olympics Buddy Walk from 11-3 on September 30th. I learned about this organization from the Involvement fair and a couple pieces of background information about this organization is that they spread awareness about Special Olympics around the Columbus area. The service I provided at the Buddy Walk was supervising multiple inflatables and making sure that no one got hurt while using the inflatables. What I have learned about myself as a result of this service is that I am developing soft skills such as authenticity by being in contact with other individuals. Volunteering has impacted me as a leader by experimenting and trying new things. I have never volunteered at a buddy walk simply because I never had one back in my hometown. This gave me the opportunity to learn and see what the Buddy Walk was all about. Because of service learning, I am confident and feel better about the person I am going to become in the future.

The second place I volunteered at was The Pack Shack: Feed the Funnel. Feed the Funnel was from 10:30pm-1am at Jesse Owens South. The Pack Shack’s: Feed the Funnel donates food to people in Ohio who are food insecure. Feed the Funnel wanted the volunteers to pack 100,000 meals in two hours. The service I provided was making and packaging microwavable vegetable meals into boxes. 36 meals would go into each box. What I have learned about myself as a result of my service is that I am making an impact on others based on the little things I do. Volunteering has impacted me as a leader by getting out of my comfort zone by working with new people and challenging myself to try something different. Because of service learning, I am making a difference within my community. https://ohiounion.osu.edu/events.aspx/2018/10/4/62394/-feed-the-funnel-community-service-project?a=2

The third place I volunteered was at the Columbus Marathon from 7am-12pm. I learned about the Marathon from the weekly emails we receive from Abigail. The service I provided at the marathon was handing out water and Gatorade to the runners as they were passing by. What I have learned about myself as a result of this service is that I can withstand the cold. It was around 30 degrees outside when we first started and I was freezing but I was not going to give up. Even though my hands and feet got numb a couple of times, I stuck through it until the end and I was very proud of myself. Volunteering has impacted myself as a leader by building skills to become a more rounded person. Because of service learning, I am developing new skills, making newfound friends, and getting to know the community around me. http://www.columbusmarathon.com/

True Colors Reflection

True colors is a personality test that determines what color you best relate to. There is orange, which are the outgoing, spontaneous, and energetic people. You have gold and they are the ones that are the most organized and need to have everything in an orderly fashion. Green are the people who aspire to learn new things and enjoy the information they receive. Last but not least are the color blue and they are the more relaxed group. The True Colors can be applied to the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars because we all have different personalities and characteristics that balance each other out. We all have different characteristics from each group and that is what makes us unique. When all of the colors are together, we are successful in what we can achieve.

Definition of Leadership

Leadership to me means taking charge and using your strengths and weaknesses to help others and yourself accomplish goals and aspirations in your lives. One example of when I have seen leadership in a sports or wellness aspect is when my team and I were losing a game against our biggest rivals. We did not have any motivation to continue going on. By the end of the second half, we were drained and couldn’t take it anymore, we just wanted the game to be over with and we wanted to go home. We had a time out and our coach and another teammate of mine said some encouraging words to us and told us to not give up. We have been trying to beat this team for years and they told us that we worked too hard to come to the point of just giving up. We have to put our all into it and make sure that everyone contributes. We all had to accommodate for other peoples downfalls and brighsides of the game and that motivated us to continue on with the game. Even though we lost, we were still winners in our hearts and in them coaches and this wouldn’t have happened without the leadership and encouraging words of our coach and others around us. One reason I would describe this as leadership is because we all discussed our strengths and weaknesses when it came to us being on the court. Whoever couldn’t do one thing, another teammate had their back and would do it for them and visa versa. Another reason why this is an example of leadership is because nobody judged each other on our downfalls and we were all encouraging of one another, which is what good leaders do.

About Me

My name is Sabryn Davis-Cannon and I am an incoming freshman at Ohio State this Fall. I am a Health and Rehabilitation Sciences major with a pre-medicine track. My long-term goal is to be accepted into Medical School and become a Doctor, specifically an Anesthesiologist. I am also minoring in Biology. Over the summer, I had the great pleasure of traveling to Spain and getting to see some amazing cities such as Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona. I got to learn about their culture more and was able to listen to the things they were saying. I might have picked up some of their language. If I could travel to any place in the world right now I would either go to Greece or Iceland because of the beautiful land and artifacts. During the fall semester I plan on volunteering at the Wexner Medical Center and have a job.

My hobbies include reading online books, playing volleyball and cheerleading, hanging out with my friends, and relaxing during my free time. I have been cheering for fifteen years and playing volleyball for nine years. I live seven and a half to eight hours away from Columbus, depending on how many stops my parents and I take. It is a long drive but I am used to it. My favorite color is blue and I love food!

I cant wait to meet everyone and begin my journey at Ohio State!
