Year in Review

  1. This past year, I have expanded my global awareness through a variety of different classes, both through Fisher and the ASC. Courses like international business and sociology of terrorism take looks outside of the United States to discover how different cultures and countries can be compatible on the global stage or how they can vastly affect each other. I plan to continue to expand my global awareness in my next two years at Ohio State through more coursework like Global criminology and others classes that look at real world issues and instances in countries other than our own.
  2. So far, I have actively participated in required coursework for my major like Research Methods in Sociology and others that prepared me to use the research process and to understand original inquiry. This semester, I applied and was accepted into both Fisher’s Industry Immersion program and Honors Immersion (formerly known as the Honors Contract). Combined, these programs will help me in creating a research project addressing a pressing question in my chosen industry (sports). I look forward to working toward my own original inquiry project as well as working with c-suite executives as I explore an industry that I one day hope to find myself in.
  3. The level of coursework that I have chosen to enroll myself in during my time at Ohio State should be reflective of the type of student I am, and constantly and working to be. My Honors Contract should reflect higher level coursework that also overlaps with my genuine interests. As I am on the pre-law track, it can be noted that I have noted as many law-related classes as are available to me, so I can not only confirm my interest in a career in law, but also prepare myself for the road to get there. I believe that my two majors of Finance and Criminology will serve me well and set me apart when applying to various law schools with the intent to be accepted into their contract law programs.
  4. This past year, I have found myself becoming more and more involved in my activities both inside and outside of the classroom. Dedicating myself to activities that require me to step up and become a leader will come full circle in also helping me stand out in the classroom as well. In my professional business fraternity, Phi Chi Theta, I have become more and more involved with my committee, even heading the planning for brand new events. This semester, I also became involved with the OSU Indoor Soccer Club, allowing me to reignite a passion for a sport that I have played my entire life. In this role, I am not only required to become a leader in times where my team needs extra guidance, but I am also learning to lead as a fellow teammate and to assist peers at the same level as I am. Finally, I have also been working towards my leadership development skills in my workplace. For the past two years I have been a shift supervisor at CVS, often having to delegate tasks to those older than me, which has taught me a great deal about leadership and how to address my colleagues.
  5. With my high level of commitment to my current engagements, I have found that participating in numerous short-term service activities can both make a powerful impact on my community and have a fulfilling impact on myself. I often take an hour out of my week to volunteer at the local Girls and Boys club with members of my fraternity to help kids in the Columbus area after school with homework or being a role model and support system for them. One of the pillars in my business fraternity is philanthropy, and I have always found myself taking every opportunity presented to clean up Columbus, make an impact on at least on child, or even help to organize a local Goodwill. I plan to continue committing to these service events throughout my time at Ohio State and beyond, because I thoroughly believe that I have a responsibility to give back to those who need it, or just to repay a community that has provided me a safe and stable place to live.
