Hi! My name is Kate Daugherty. I’m from Miamisburg, Ohio (about 10 minutes outside of Dayton). I’m a first year student and I’m majoring in English. I’ve always been interested in reading and writing, which played an important role in my decision to major in English. I’m on a pre-law track and I hope to continue to law school after I get my bachelor’s degree. I’m interested and excited to take more English classes in the coming semesters. I’m particularly interested in literature courses and creative writing. The best ways for me to learn are through writing and hands-on activities. My goals are to stay on top of all my classwork and not allow myself to fall behind, as I know this would be very overwhelming for me. I also want to put classes first and make sure I have my work done before I do other things.
I took AP Environmental Science my junior year of high school, and that class sparked my interest and passion for the environment. Since my junior year, issues in the environment and politics have progressively worsened, which further elevated my interest in the environment. I hope to learn more about what I can do to help the environment. I’ve only been at OSU for a week, and we’ve already engaged in activities to help and improve the environment through ENR Scholars, including the river cleanup. I hope to lead a more sustainable lifestyle during my time at OSU, and I feel that I’ve made some progress by using a reusable straw and refillable water bottles, and significantly decreasing my use of single-use plastics, like utensils. I don’t have a lot of experience with outdoor adventure, but I do love kayaking and hiking, as well as just spending time outside. I hope that through my time in ENR Scholars, I will gain experience in more outdoor activities, such as climbing and camping. I’m excited for my first year at OSU and in ENR Scholars!
