My First Semester at OSU

Wow! The semester sure has gone by fast… Now nearing the end of my first semester, I wonder, what all did I accomplish? To start, I made a lot of new friends. My roommate, fellow Humanities scholars, classmates, professors, people I just meet on the street, they’re everywhere! All it takes is a friendly hello around here or an awkward silence and you’ve got a new friend. That’s what I love about OSU, there’s always people around to meet and talk to. However, some people are not so nice, especially when you’re walking down N. High on a Saturday night and drunk people try and steal your Chipotle… But that might just be me… I guess it’s safe to say that OSU is just a naturally friendly and amiable environment and it’s one of the reasons I came here in the first place. I also did pretty well in my classes, well… all but one. Just for the record, statistics is NOT my thing. “Hate” would not be a strong enough word, but statistics might compare with the Chipotle-stealing drunk people. Chemistry was a minor challenge, I had already taken AP in high school and it’s most of the same material, just a little more in-depth. Spanish just developed my love for the language even more than it had in high school. I love the fact that you can communicate with people from an entirely different country, continent, and culture from your own, which most people can not. I plan to finish my minor in Spanish my senior terms. Reading “My First Week at OSU”, I realize how different things have already become. I am much less intimidated by meeting new people. Also, chemistry lab was a lot less stressful than I thought it would be although it did have its moments. I didn’t end up going to Chicago, which makes me a little sad, maybe a different opportunity will arise in the future. I do miss home a lot, that hasn’t gone away. They say it gets easier, but for me it’s just getting harder. I miss my boyfriend a lot. FaceTime and phone calls don’t compare to seeing him in person. I also miss my two nephews, one is just 4 months old so it’s hard being away at such a cute phase in his life. I miss my other family as well. But, Christmas break is coming up soon (8 DAYS!!) and that should help with the homesickness and stress relief from finals. Overall, it’s been a memorable and great first semester and I hope it just keeps getting better!

Humans of OSU– Miguel García

From the capitol of Peru to The Ohio State University, Miguel Garcia has journeyed far and wide to accomplish his dreams. Teaching has been his goal ever since he was young. At the ripe age of 14 years old, he made the courageous decision to move from Lima, Peru to the United States of America. His father worked here in the states and so he moved from South America to the new and different culture of America. He became bilingual in English and Spanish, with interests in Portuguese and German. He received his B.A. in Spanish from Stony Brook University along with a M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics. He is now working on his Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from The Ohio State University. He enjoys teaching greatly, helping students understand and comprehend the Spanish language is his dream. If he could have any animal as a pet, it would be a small bear (he laughed a lot at this question). Miguel loves making others happy and enjoying life just as it is.

My Top Strengths

Knowing who you are can sometimes be difficult because our minds are always changing and developing new traits and strengthening others. So knowing exactly who you are as a person can always be changing. However, some things never change. For me, when I took the Strengths assessment, I knew what would show up. I knew I was especially responsible, agreeable, interested in learning, dealing with conflict, and seek to help others. I’ve been told this my entire life. People have told me that I’m well adept to solving problems and that I was “go-with-the-flow”. As much as I enjoy helping others with their problems, I hate creating problems for myself. It’s not worth it to start drama and complain for a few seconds of self-satisfaction with how good you are as a person in comparison to another. We’re all good at different things, to compare ourselves to others is pointless. There will always be someone better at some things than you, there will also be someone who is worse at something than you. You should value what you have to offer, not linger over what you can not. In this way, the Strengths test was beneficial. In opposition, five words is not all that a person can offer. There are more than 34 adjectives that can define a person. I understand that the point of the assessment was to focus on the top 5 things you do well, but in that way, it’s limiting you to what you know you can do well. I know I’m responsible, but I also know I’m empathetic, which wasn’t on the assessment.

I don’t think that a computer module should define who you are in five simple adjectives. Sure, that’s not all you are, but the computer is telling you what you’re best at. That should be left up to the person themselves. Maybe if the questions were more situational rather than strongly agree/strongly disagree, I might agree more with the module.

I already was aware of my strengths. I want to use my responsibility and restorative strengths when I become a doctor. A doctor of what I am not yet sure. All of my strengths can be used in my future. Comforting patients brings in Developer. Harmony comes in handy when working in a group. Input will be useful when doing research or going through college in general. All of my strengths will be used in my future. As for my personal life, friends always come to me for advice thanks to my Restorative and Developer strengths. I seek resolution for conflict and focus on making others feel important my priority. Many people feel they can tell me secrets and issues because they see me as extremely trustworthy. I also value honesty, due to my Responsibility strength. I tell it like it is, and if you don’t want the honest truth, I’m not who you want to talk to.

Overall, the Strengths assessment didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. I don’t necessarily agree that the Strengths assessment was useful. Five words should not define who you are and what you’re best at, which is what this test focuses on. I use my strengths everyday, and I will continue to do so in the future.

My First Week at OSU

Who's Big Sean?My first week at OSU has been very eventful. Move-in day was not nearly as stressful as I assumed it would be. All of the OWL’s were very helpful, and did most of the work, which was nice. My roommate is awesome, and a made a couple new friends at the Retreat. The Big Sean concert was pretty fun, although I had no idea who he was. But, my friends made it really fun! Overall, if the rest of my year is like my first week, I will be completely happy with that. I’m most excited about joining more clubs, and meeting more people. I’m most scared for the same things. Meeting new people can be extremely intimidating, especially if they’re considerably different from you. I expect that though. Some people just can’t connect, while others connect on an entire different level. If you never put yourself out there, you’ll never know. I expect the rest of my year to get increasingly harder, as my courses continue to challenge me (especially Chem lab). I am extremely excited for all of the events the Hum. Scholars are holding this year! Especially, Chicago and all of the musicals/symphonies we’re going to.

About Me

When describing myself, I suppose I should start with my name. My name is Hannah Daugherty and I currently maintain the age of 18 years. I will gain one more year on October 14th. I’m from a mix of Hamilton, OH and Loveland, OH (I recently moved from my mom’s house to my dad’s). I have an unhealthy obsession with cups, coffee, and movies/musicals. Some more of my passions/likes include, but are not limited to: beaches, archery, horseback riding, jars, tea, Netflix (who doesn’t love Netflix?), my nephews, and New York City. I also love the Spanish language and culture, so I plan on minoring in it. To add to my minor, I want to obtain a major in Biology or Cellular Biology, I haven’t quite decided (who could choose?). If you haven’t already noticed, I like to overuse parentheses. For my future, I would love to attend medical school, or possibly veterinary school. If I did pursue veterinary medicine, I would very much enjoy working at a zoo instead of an average animal clinic. I couldn’t imagine a better place to accomplish these things than The Ohio State University. It’s been my dream school since freshman year of high school. One of the most meaningful experiences I had in high school was spent with my color guard team. If you’re unfamiliar, color guard in high school marching bands is the team waving the flags, rifles, and other weapons along to the music of the marching band. Color guard was my life, I was squad leader my junior year and rose to captain my senior year. Those girls became my family, and shaped me into who I am today. If you’d like to see what kind of shows we performed, let me know and I’ll send you a YouTube link. I hope to grow as a learner and as a person here at OSU, and I’m so glad to be apart of this community. Go Bucks!
