Check out the Becoming a Data Scientist Blog.   It has great articles and informative podcasts.  I would recommend giving Episode 6 a listen.  In this episode, the author talks to a former Bioinformatics PhD graduate, Erin Shellman, about how she became a data scientists.  It is a great podcasts and shines some light on how scientists can make the transition.
