Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Going through life, a person is often more successful when they have end goals in mind. When there are difficult, yet tangible tasks that are desired to be accomplished, those are what keeps someone motivated to keep working hard. The concept of G.O.A.L.S. is a great idea to keep in mind throughout all four years of undergrad, and it is a great reminder of what Honors is all about.

The first letter stands for global awareness, which is really all about learning and appreciating other cultures. One way that I plan on achieving this step is to go on a summer study abroad.  A study abroad trip is something that I have wanted to do for a long time because I feel that it is so important in becoming a better individual. Through a study abroad, students are thrown into a completely new environment and learn first hand how other people in different parts of the world interact and live first hand. Not only do I plan to study abroad, but I am also in a Greek social cultural group called Sigma Epsilon Phi. The purpose of this group is to appreciate Greek culture with a community who does as well.

The next section deals with original inquiry. This topic is very exciting for me because feels very liberating to be able to pursue knowledge and ideas based on what you want. Research is definitely something that I plan on at least looking at because especially in neuroscience, there are so many interesting ideas that are being tested and so much information that still needs to be understood about the brain. Ohio state also has so many amazing research opportunities so it will not be hard to find a good lab to work in.

For the academic enrichment section, I definitely plan on taking honors classes throughout my time at OSU. I plan on taking these classes not only because there are requirements but also because the smaller classroom settings are great for fully taking in the knowledge of the content. There is such a wide array of amazing classes that we are able to take and I can’t wait to look into some good options for me.

Leadership opportunities is a must for me since I have done them throughout my life, and the importance of them with med school. I definitely plan on taking on an exec board position with the Sigma group next year if I am able, and then potentially taking on an exec board role with PhiDE as long as I will not be stretched too thin. The importance of leadership positions are that if you are in too many then you will not be spending an adequate amount of time that you need to in order to be successful. So in response, I plan on taking a close look at good leadership positions for me and picking the best ones that I feel the most passionate about.

Service engagement is the last tier of G.O.A.L. S. and it is definitely something that I will do much of. Since my goal is med school, there is a lot of service that needs to be done. In order to be driven and passionate about who I am working with, I plan to choose two or three service groups (one being a hospital) and really spend a lot of time with those. When you volunteer with something you are passionate about, the volunteer work does not seem like work at all.
