Goal:
The goal of Performance Test 3 was to navigate to the cores sample, remove it, and deposit it in the correct bin. Extra points were awarded for navigating to and touching the antenna or its housing. Five attempts were allowed for the performance test.
Scoring:
Touch core sample – 5 points
Remove core sample – 5 points
Deposit core sample in a bin – 5 points
Deposit in the correct bin – 5 points
Bonus – touch the antenna or its housing
Results:
The robot failed the only attempt due to its inability to consistently navigate to and grab the core. The group only decided to test twice because the robot was highly inconsistent. On the first try the robot earned a 10 out of 20 while on the second test the robot earned a 0 out of 20. On the first test the robot was able to get to the core and pull it out, but the robot did not transport it to the bin. In the second test, the robot was not able to grab the core, therefore earning 0 points. During the practice for this performance test, the team realized that the robot was unable to deposit the core because the core consistently got stuck in the forklift. Therefore, the group decided not to try to deposit the core. Another issue that consistently plagued the robot was that sometimes the forklift would not lower enough and it could not fit under the core. Click to view Performance Test Scores
Analysis:
The results from the performance test were analyzed and improvements were made to the robot based upon those results. One improvement that was made to the robot was the addition of more RPS checks to ensure that the robot could consistently navigate to the core. Another improvement was made to the robot to make the forklift consistently fit underneath the core. The prongs on the forklift were shaved down so that it could consistently fit underneath, grab, and transport the core. The team also decided that the it would be fruitless to spend extra time on trying to deposit the core because depositing the core would earn only extra points in the final competition, and the forklift was incapable of doing it. Therefore, the team spent no more time trying to deposit the core.
