Academic Event Reflection
This was an academic event presented by the Student Wellness Center. This presentation focused on providing us information about nutrition and ultimately how to take care of ourselves. Some information that stuck out to me was the nine dimensions of wellness. The nine dimensions of wellness are: career, emotional, creative, physical, environment, social, financial, intellectual and spiritual. We were told to look at these nine dimensions and think about the dimensions we are struggling with. Personally, I have been struggling with the emotional, social, financial and intellectual dimensions of wellness.
First, emotionally I have been struggling to handle all of the feelings of being in college and being away from my family. Second, socially I have been struggling to find the right group of people to surround myself with. I have met and became friends with a lot of people here, but it’s hard to know which people I should surround myself with. Third, financially its hard being in college, especially having to pay out of state tuition. It is also hard managing money here because you don’t want to waste all of your money on useless things. Lastly, intellectually I struggle because I tend to overstudy and not give myself enough time to relax.
The presenter told us to write down our goals to improve one of the nine dimensions of wellness that we are struggling with. My goal was to increase my intellectual wellness by working on my time management and to stop overstudying. I promised myself to stop studying by 9:30pm, take 10 minute breaks between each assignment, and to get out of the dorm/study area and do something active once a day.
Additionally, in the presentation I learned about what the Student Wellness Center offers. I learned about the Buckeye Food Alliance, Financial Coaching, and Nutrition Coaching. I didn’t know about any of these programs/services until attending this presentation. I plan on using at least one of these services to better myself during my time here at Ohio State.
