Student Wellness Center Presentation to International Affairs

August 27th, 2019, Mendenhall Lab 100, 7:00pm-8:00pm

Academic Event Reflection

This was an academic event presented by the Student Wellness Center. This presentation focused on providing us information about nutrition and ultimately how to take care of ourselves. Some information that stuck out to me was the nine dimensions of wellness. The nine dimensions of wellness are: career, emotional, creative, physical, environment, social, financial, intellectual and spiritual. We were told to look at these nine dimensions and think about the dimensions we are struggling with. Personally, I have been struggling with the emotional, social, financial and intellectual dimensions of wellness.

First, emotionally I have been struggling to handle all of the feelings of being in college and being away from my family. Second, socially I have been struggling to find the right group of people to surround myself with. I have met and became friends with a lot of people here, but it’s hard to know which people I should surround myself with. Third, financially its hard being in college, especially having to pay out of state tuition. It is also hard managing money here because you don’t want to waste all of your money on useless things. Lastly, intellectually I struggle because I tend to overstudy and not give myself enough time to relax.

The presenter told us to write down our goals to improve one of the nine dimensions of wellness that we are struggling with. My goal was to increase my intellectual wellness by working on my time management and to stop overstudying. I promised myself to stop studying by 9:30pm, take 10 minute breaks between each assignment, and to get out of the dorm/study area and do something active once a day.

Additionally, in the presentation I learned about what the Student Wellness Center offers. I learned about the Buckeye Food Alliance, Financial Coaching, and Nutrition Coaching. I didn’t know about any of these programs/services until attending this presentation. I plan on using at least one of these services to better myself during my time here at Ohio State.

Greek Festival

August 30, 2019, 6:00pm-8:00pm

Social Event Reflection

This was a social event that took place at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Friday, August 30th. At this festival I was able to learn more about the Greek culture. Being in IA we are supposed to learn about the world around us and the groups within it, in order to breakdown our prejudices. Going to this festival I was able to immerse myself in the Greek culture by eating gyros and Greek pastries, talking to Greeks, listen to Greek music, and being able to watch their traditional dancing.

During this time I was able to think about how different the Greek culture is from the American culture, as well as my Kenyan culture. I saw how the music and dancing were very different. I also saw how the food is very different from the Kenyan food I am accustomed too. I was able to really appreciate my culture, as well as the Greek culture for how beautiful and unique it is.

I have a very big passion for festivals. Each year I go to Chicago and attend different festivals with my brother. I was able to see the difference between the Greek festival and the other cultural festivals I’ve been too. This festival was more intimate than the other festivals I have experienced. I enjoyed this intimate type of festival more because I was able to really interact and immerse myself in this culture.

Ultimately, it was a very fun experience that allowed me to learn more about the Greek culture and be able to interact with Greeks. I look forward to attending other cultural festivals in the future.
