Accenture Case Competition

I competed in my first case competition this past spring with Accenture a consulting firm. It was my  first time participating in a case competition. I applied to participate on a whim, thinking why not this could be fun. Next thing I know I’m getting an email about when and where I should be to participate. The participants were put into teams and asked to solve this case about food waste in partnership with WWF thee world wildlife fund. It was an awesome experience because I was really able to experience real world issues and conflicts that people in consulting or business in general have to solve. I got a taste what I would be doing in my future occupation. I was really eye opening and I was glad I was able to work in a team. It was helpful to have people from Accenture advise us and really give us tips and advice on how to move forward. This experience really moved my focus past not just my formal education but into real life situations. We didn’t win or even make it past the first round and that’s okayI learned a lot and had a blast working with my team.

OSU Football

This might seem like a weird thing to pick to help represent my educational experience. But its a true testament to me education. Football is not just a sport, its a teaching, a bible in sorts a reflection of working hard having grit and being destined to achieve greatness. Football is a metaphor of my education. It’s significant in that it shows me that I cant’ quit, I won’t quit. Working towards a goal and overcoming the odds. OSU football is the perfect example of that, my freshman year at OSU the football one the national championship after overcoming a loss their first game. everyone told them they couldn’t win the whole thing because they couldn’t beat Alabama, yet with a third string quarterback. they did just that, they won the National championship. It’s a significant testament to me telling me that I can overcome any struggles and challenges.

Logistics

Coming into OSU, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I knew that I wanted to get a business degree but with that degree I didn’t know what to do with it. In the Fisher college of Business you have to take several core classes ranging from all the specializations in Fisher. This past semester I took a logistics class which I loved, it really opened my eyes to the world of transportation and logistics. I’m an Operations Management major, which is very similar in the sense that Operations is the inner workings of a warehouse or manufacturing plant while Logistics is the outer transportation portion its the tracking and movement of goods. Something about transportation really sparks inside of me. The moving of goods is something I’m fiercely interested in.  While at OSU I’ve learned a passion of mine, something I can look for in the everyday supply chain. Now when  go to the Grocery store I don’t see just the goods and produce out on the shelves. I see the work behind it, the forklifts and trucks the movement and patterns. This class has not only changed my interest but how I see the world, and what’s around me.

Wexner Art Center

The Wexner Art Center is a very important place to me. I’ve chosen it was an artifact because of my love of art, I love everything about art to the way it makes me feel to the way it brings people together. I discover it earlier this year from an art history teacher who instructed us to go write about one piece of art that was currently exhibiting. It is one of the greatest hidden gems I’ve found on campus. It’s free to students and you are able to just wander in and view the exhibits for a little bit. I always find myself wandering in there after a stressful class or exam it instantly calms me, and I just focus on the beauty and details of the brush strokes. It teaches me about artistic and creative side of me that isn’t able to be discovered everyday in my major. This artistic expression has allowed not only an outlet to de-stress but it lets me engage in the visual and creative learner inside me.

The Wall Street Journal

The artifact I’ve chosen is The Wall Street Journal. This newspaper has taught me so much, it’s taught be about different perspectives and views. It’s acknowledged hot topics without pushing buttons. I’ve read the online version almost everyday in between classes and meetings it’s how I stay informed in this bubble on campus where the outside world seems to be on pause. This is representative of the education I have learned outside of OSU. Ever since I took an International Business class at Fisher my professor stressed the importance of reading the newspaper of understanding the world and the industry you want to go into it. He stressed that reading up and gaining knowledge can only help you with the work that is ahead of you. I also use this as a resource so whenever I’m confused about a topic or term I always search for it on the Wall Street Journal website and see what articles they have on the topic.  The Wall Street Journal is an essential part of my education from my dad and I exchanging articles through email or discussing the latest spike in the price of oil. I have learned how to distinguish good writing from great writing and what constitutes opinion from fact. This newspaper is important to me for deciphering the world around me.
