Welcome to South Asian Dance Retreat 2016

COVER

The South Asian Dance Retreat will introduce the fundamentals, principles and basic vocabulary of Indian classical dance technique. The class structure will consist of a series of exercises and basic movement patterns aimed toward improving body alignment and coordination. The technique will demand a strong sense of rhythm, musicality and body awareness. The workshop will culminate with a live performance of the participants showcasing their newly acquired knowledge along with the facilitators of the workshop.

Odissi, an eastern Indian classical dance is known for sculpturesque postures and graceful gestures as seen in the temple architecture in India. The daily practice of the technique fosters strength, endurance and flexibility. Bharatnatyam, a southern Indian classical dance is known for its geometric patterns and spatial coverage. The northern Indian classical dance form, Kathhak, is known for its spins and nuanced hand gestures. Students will learn excerpts from the established repertoire of these dance forms along with their historical, cultural and socio-political context.

Our guest artists from India are senior Bharatnatyam dancer, Kalaimamani Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala and upcoming Odissi dancer, Sriradha Paul. Kaustavi Sarkar, Artistic Director of Kaustavi Movement Center and the organizer of SADR, will also teach Odissi dance. We also have instructioners from the Columbus community, Belly dancer, Angie Never, Bharatnatyam exponent, Sukanya Chand, Kathak dancer, and Mansee Singhi. Julia Ayau, a certified Yoga instructors will also give classes.
