Global Awareness

  • Students will cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.  How have your course work and other undergraduate experiences helped you to develop a global perspective? Before coming to The Ohio State University I have lived in two other cities, Ann Arbor TN, and Memphis TN. I think that my experience living in more than one place and changing school system allowed me to adapt to different environments and has given me several outlets to explore my academic curiosity.

Original Inquiry

  • Honors & Scholars students will understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.  For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.  What contributions to research, creative works, or scholarly inquiry have you made as an undergraduate student? I have not published any research or works but while living in Ann Arbor I had the chance to work at the University of Michigan (Yes I know they are our rival). UofM being one of the top public universities allowed me to work alongside several highly qualified professors.  Considering I haven’t yet had the chance to conduct my own research, working at UofM was a blessing.

Academic Enrichment

  • Honors & Scholars students will pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom. How does your planned curriculum relate to your future aspirations? Consider, for example, the following questions: Why did you choose the major(s) (and minor(s), if any) you chose?  Why did you select the GE courses you have chosen?  How do your selections demonstrate a commitment to excellence?  How has your curriculum prepared you for your future endeavors? For my freshman year I have chosen History as my major. I have always been fascinated with history and grew up reading big encyclopedias and history textbooks. Reading history is what I like to do when I have free time, hence it is a staple of my life. My current selections demonstrate my commitment to excellence by choosing a major that I thoroughly enjoy, not only do I complete what is required, I read ahead and challenge myself to learn more.

Leadership Development

  • Honors & Scholars students will develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and that prepares them for their future roles in society. With which activities are you involved?  How does your involvement contribute to your development as a leader?  How does your involvement relate to your personal and/or career goals?  How have your involvements (for example, in student organizations, internships, work, community involvement, etc.) contributed to your personal, professional, and intellectual development?  How would you describe your leadership style? Throughout high school I was the chess team captain all four years. My senior year of high school I switched to football and after four months of rehab for a knee injury I came back as a starter and a team captain. In a one word description of my leadership style it would be “committed” . I am a strong believer that the best way to lead is by example, showing up everyday and accomplishing what needs to be done.

Service Engagement

  • Honors & Scholars students will commit to service to the community. With which activities are you involved (both ongoing and short-term commitments)?  How do you plan to continue to engage with the community?  Did your service involvement contribute to your understanding of a social issue or problem?  If so, how? I have engaged with my community throughout my life by volunteering, whether its being a camp counselor or being a tutor. I plan to do the same at Ohio State whenever possible. After my freshman year or maybe even after this semester once I am fully acquainted with what the university has to offer I will be volunteering in my spare time.
