Teaching

Mission

A central goal for me as an educator is to empower students to engage in serious play. Serious play happens when students recognize the challenges before them and the relevance they have to their lives (it is serious) but regard the situations as ones in which they are safe to make mistakes as they develop their skills and knowledge (it is play). Aiming for serious play ensures that every student is challenged, but no student feels the challenge is insurmountable; it pushes students toward excellence in a way that is both impactful and fun for all. Philosophy is an excellent subject for this approach to thrive. The topics we teach are important, relevant, and interesting. My experience shows that engaging in serious play helps students to excel in meeting the learning objectives and guides their development into well-rounded, critical-thinking citizens.
