This FAQ refers to the first wave of this study (completed in 2019).

 

DMS App installation

  • My app isn’t responding. What should I do?
    • This happens sometimes. If it happens repeatedly, we recommend…
      • First, close and reopen the app.
      • If it still doesn’t respond, uninstall the app and then reinstall the app.
        • Make sure you clear the data from the old app before your reinstall the app. When you login to your reinstalled app, use the same confirmation number that was originally assigned.

Sleep time/ Wake time

  • Can I reset my sleep/wake time?
    • Yes, you can reset your sleep/wake time anytime you want during the study. However, your new sleep/wake time will not take effect until the next calendar day. So, we do not recommend doing so repeatedly.

Trips/Surveys

  • When/How do I combine/split/delete a trip?
    • COMBINE two records if they are both part of the same transportation event and same type of transportation (e.g., walking outdoors). Select one of the trips that you want to combine. Select the “combine” option. It will then direct you to a page where you can select another trip you want to combine the current trip with.
    • SPLIT a record if it includes two different transportation events.
    • DELETE a trip if the map displays a completely inaccurate record of your movement (note: some GPS inaccuracy are expected).
  • Is there a way for me to add a trip?
    • No, there is no option to add a trip. However, do not worry if the trips on the app do not perfectly capture every single trip that you make (note: some GPS inaccuracy are expected).
  • My trips are not appearing on the app. What should I do?
    • Don’t worry if not all of your trips are appearing on the app. It is expected that there will be some GPS inaccuracy. However, if you repeatedly face missed trips within the same day, please contact us.
  • If I go on a trip with my pets, does that count as traveling with someone else? 
    • OSU DMS is a pet-friendly study but only humans count for trip questionnaires.
  • I could not fill out most of the surveys. Can I re-take the surveys?
    • No, these surveys are programmed to expire within a few hours. Therefore, you should answer these surveys as soon as possible when they become ACTIVATED in the app, so long as it is safe to do so. Please remember you must continue to the end of each online survey in order to receive full compensation for Part B.
  • An “Error” alert showed up on my survey. What should I do? 
    • If an “error” alert shows up more than once, please restart your phone.
    • You will not be penalized for surveys that say “Error”. Surveys that error may be due to your phone being turned off or a technical issue with the Android operating system. Thus, we recommend you keep your phone charged at all times and monitor your phone to make sure that the OSU DMS banner shows up in your phone’s notification center.
  • I completed Part B of the study. What do I do next?
    • By day 14, you should’ve completed part B of the study. On day 16, Part C of the study should become available on the app.

Compensation

  • How much do I receive if I completed part A, but could not install the DMS app on my phone?
    • You will earn $10 for completing Part A. If you encounter any technical issues that prevent you from downloading the study application, you will receive an additional $5 as compensation, bringing your total to $15.
  • How much do I receive if I completed part A and part B?
    • You will earn compensation in Part B by completing 80% of all possible surveys and trips on a given day. A successfully completed day will earn $4. Therefore, you will earn $56 across the 14-day period if no days are <80% complete. In addition, if you complete the two-week period with at least 80% completion of trips/surveys overall, you will also receive a bonus $14 for your effort, bringing your Part B total to $70 total.
    • In sum, if you completed Part A and successfully completed 80% of all possible surveys and trips across the 14-day period, you will earn a total of $80.
    • Technical note: If you encounter any technical issues that prevent you from running the application after starting Part B, you will receive $10 as compensation in addition to any earnings you accumulated in prior days. 
  • How much do I receive if I completed all three part of the study (part A, B, and C)?
    • You will earn $15 for completing Part C. Altogether, you can earn up to $95 for completing all components of the OSU Daily Mobility Study.
  • How will I receive my compensation?
    • Your total compensation will be calculated and emailed to you as an online Amazon gift card.
  • When will I receive my compensation?
    • Please allow us 4 weeks past when you completed Part C to receive your Amazon gift card.
