Mixed Animal Externship in West Virginia

We are excited to share Sarah Edmond’s experience below, funded by Charlie’s Angels fund.

Through the Global Engagement grant, I could travel to West Virginia for three weeks and experience a mixed animal medicine externship. My time at Fairlea Animal Hospital was split between being a part of the small animal clinic for four days a week and then spending one day a week doing significant animal work, which consisted primarily of Cow/Calf and feedlot medicine.

The experience was driven towards being extremely hands-on and working towards perfecting my clinical skills. While working at the small animal hospital, I was able to see general wellness appointments, work up and hospitalize sick patients who needed multiple-day treatment plans, and do a vast array of surgeries. My time spent working primarily with cattle was to help build my confidence with treatment plans and herd management. Overall, this externship helped build my confidence immensely, and I am ready to take on this type of caseload upon graduation.
