Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: Delete these instructions and add your own post.]

First, being in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program has allowed me to fulfill the Leadership Development and Service Engagement categories.  Through Mount, I have attended numerous leadership-building events and seminars with leaders from OSU and the Columbus community.  In addition, I have also been given the opportunity to lead during Mount Legacy Week, Move-in Day, and Buck-I-Frenzy.  I have also been committed to service on a monthly basis for the last two years.  This includes completely a Year of Service at the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource Center.  Finally, I have taken ESHESA 2571S, a leadership in community service course.

For Global Awareness, I am a team member at TEDxOhioStateUniversity.  As an organization, we are dedicated to showcasing the diversity and innovations of the OSU community.  Every year, we host a signature event that brings together speakers (students, faculty, or alumni) from different backgrounds to create a dialogue on the issues that matter most to them.  In addition, this year I completed my Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement (DICE) certificate.  Throughout the program, I attended events that introduced me to new ideas and challenged my perceptions.

This summer I plan to do research at Ohio State or at a hospital.  This experience would satisfy the Original Inquiry and Academic Enrichment categories.  I would be given the opportunity to apply what I learned in my coursework and engage in the scientific process towards new discoveries.

I have not yet completed an internship or research experience.  I am actively applying to summer undergraduate research positions for summer 2018.  The programs I am interested in are mainly through hospitals or biomedical departments.  I hope to apply the skills I have learned through my coursework to a real-life experience and gain a greater understanding of work in a clinical setting.

My artifact is the research paper I wrote in my English 1110 course freshman year.  I chose to include this paper because it reflects my style as a student, writer, and thinker.  My research included critically analyzing a short film and connecting it to a modern-day social movement.  The short film depicted a bleak, but artistic social commentary on the income inequality in the United States and the Occupy Wall Street movement.  This paper allowed me to demonstrate my detailed-oriented analytical capabilities as I combined what I saw in the short film with my knowledge of social economics and the Occupy movement.  This project was the first research-based experience I had in college and helped me affirm my interest in pursuing research opportunities throughout my education.
