Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

The first aspect of the Honors and Scholars Program’s G.O.A.L.S is global awareness. This deals with examining what it means to be a global citizen and learn and cultivate an appreciation of diversity. Throughout my four years at Ohio State, I plan to work toward the goal of Global Awareness. One way in which I hope to further my global awareness is through studying abroad. I plan on studying abroad to a country where they do not speak my native language in order to really learn and understand a culture that is very different my own which will help me to appreciate the diversity of the world. Another way I will increase my global awareness is taking Global Studies classes. The two classes that I plan on taking to learn more about Global Studies are Microbiology 3798.05 which involves learning about HIV/AIDS and its prevalence in underdeveloped countries in Africa and also includes a study abroad trip to Africa and also Comparative Studies 1100H which explores the role of literature and art in developing multiple cultures of the world. These classes will increase my knowledge of other cultures which in turn will increase my global awareness.

The second aspect of the G.O.A.L.S is original inquiry. This deals with research including independent research or in-class experiences. To further this aspect of the program, I will participate in research. I would either like to participate in research regarding medicine or psychology. I am planning on minoring in Psychology and am very interested in participating in research in the Cognitive Development Lab. These experiences will further my understanding of research and also my interest in original inquiry.

The third aspect is Academic Enrichment. This aspect is regarding students working hard to achieve academic excellence. A very helpful tool in reaching academic excellence is the Academic Plan. Through this plan, I am able to create a plan of study by listing my major classes and GE requirements for my next four years and understanding what my future academic endeavors look like. My major I choose is Biology. I also choose to minor in Psychology. I choose to major in Biology because I am Pre-Physician Assistant and Biology gives me a strong foundation of classes and pre-requisites that I need for Physician Assistant schooling. I also choose to minor in Psychology because I am incredibly interested in the field of psychology and the research that is performed in the field. Choosing a Biology major and Psychology minor and using my Academic Plan to construct what future schedules look like for that plan was very helpful to organize my classes in order to achieve academic excellence. GE requirements are also a large part of the Academic Plan. The GE classes that I am most looking forward to are Spanish 1100.02 and Spanish 1100.03 which will further my knowledge of the Spanish language, Sociology 1100H, and Comparative Studies 1100H which will work to further my global awareness. As a whole, my course commitments demonstrate a commitment to developing a program that goes beyond the minimum requirements by choosing classes that can further multiple G.O.A.L.S and that also meet the requirements, but also goes beyond the basic knowledge required by the GE categories as shown in my involvement in multiple honors courses. Overall, the Academic Plan will help me to develop a program in order for me to achieve academic excellence by making a set plan and working towards my Honors Contract.

The fourth aspect of the G.O.A.L.S is Leadership Development. This aspect is very straightforward and works to develop the Honors students leadership skills and their leadership in society and the world. One opportunity that I want to get involved in that will cultivate my leadership skills is the College Mentors for Kids. This student organization works to mentor children in inner city schools to teach them about the immense opportunities that a college education provides and also to teach service and the appreciation of diversity to them. This will further my leadership skills by serving as a leader figure to the children through my words and also my actions. I also plan on taking part in internship to further my knowledge of the medical professions. Also, I plan on being involved in the Global Health Initiative which works to spread awareness of public health. This organization is focused on giving people voices to speak up for public health and that focus will further my leadership skills. Overall, I plan on participating in student organizations and also internships that will teach me new leadership skills and also strengthen the skills I already have.

The fifth and final aspect is Service Engagement. This aspect of the G.O.A.L.S program is focused on honors student serving society and the world through various volunteer opportunities and student organizations. To cultivate my engagement, I plan on participating in Buckeyethon to work to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. This event is a significant service project that is focused on serving others. Also, if I get involved with the College Mentor for Kids, I will work to serve the children that we mentor. Finally, I plan on getting involved with various other service clubs across campus such as Service for the World and continue to cultivate my love for service and spreading awareness for the importance of serving others.

Artifacts

My first semester has been a challenging, yet incredible transition period in my life. One artifact from this semester has been my involvement in the Pre-Physician Assistant club. After my undergraduate career, I plan on attending PA school and working as a Physician Assistant specializing in pediatrics. My involvement in this club has allowed me to learn more about the profession and also hear from people who are current PA school students and their recommendations and tips. It has been a very helpful and interesting involvement during my first semester.

About Me

I am Carly Cullion and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio. I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I am currently studying Biology with an focus on Pre-Med. I am also a member of the Honors Program. In the future, I plan on becoming a Physician Assistant specializing in Pediatrics. As a member of Service Club in high school, I loved volunteering and serving others which was and still is the root of my wish to work in medicine. Student Council and the cross country team are two more examples of my involvement in various clubs/organizations while I was in high school. Ohio State has so many wonderful opportunities and I cannot wait to continue being involved on campus!
