In Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi, The story goes with Satrapi’s autobiographical writings. The story is based on the period of the Islamic revolution, which was between 1978 and 1979. Shah had been getting his power steadily before the revolution. The problem was that he rejected the main religion of the country and offended many people. After the revolution, the country’s power went to the group with strict religious rules, and anyone against the group is charged with strong punishments. Shah lost power in 1978 as he was killed, and this helped people make the revolution, and the new group taking governments was big celebrations for Iranian people.

In 1980, with strict religious rules, the narrator had to wear a veil at her school. There were many social inequalities with the changes. As the narrator grew up watching her family’s strong movements on movements, she wanted to change the world to a better place with social equalities. Iran has really conventional rules and laws in the society, possibly it is because of the hates of western culture what Shah tried to take to the country. Shah did a bad job because he did not listen to the people of the country. 1. Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical writings are a real eye-opener to the injustices that have occurred to people throughout the world. In Iran during the Islamic revolution, Iranian men and women were forced to dress a certain and behave a certain way. Women were mandated to wear veils, and families could not throw parties or listen to music. It was also interesting to see how the social status of characters changes as they move from Iran. People who were once seen as high profile now having nothing in their new countries. For example, when Marji arrives in Austria she finds that Zozo’s husband is a nobody, but back in Iran, he was a CEO. This goes to show that people have certain prejudices before they even meet someone.

  2. Hi! The historical background you provided for the story is really helpful. Knowing that Shah rejected the main religion, aiming to introduce western culture, while the opposed group endorses conventional sales that lead to social inequality and the story happens during the Islamic revolution when the power goes from Shah to the group with strict religious rules, I can now better understand Satrapi’s experiences and why she is trying to achieve social equality.

  3. Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis story was very interesting. Learning about the perspective of Marji and what she was living through. We learn about the political and religious conflicts happening in Iran. The war and deaths that were depicted in the story. The depictions and views with God and how ideas of hers changed throughout the story. Marjane Satrapi’s Perespolis was a roller-coaster of events that shaped Marji from her early years to her adult years. From how her views and beliefs changed from certain events in her life. It was interesting getting to read and learn about what it was like for her in her years living in Iran, but also how she had to adapt moving from different places like Vienna.

  4. Marjane’s story was very unique it interesting to read about a part of the world that we often aren’t taught about. Marji holds a different perspective of the issues in Iran due to her being from there and then moving aboard. She isn’t afraid to speak her voice and protest against the inequalities in Iran.

  5. This story was very interesting and eye opening, along with the information you gave throughout your presentation also opened my eyes to many of the things throughout the novel. I think after reading this novel you see more of the injustices that take place with women or what you haven’t quite witnessed yet, it was very eye opening.

  6. I really enjoyed the background provided about Shah. I think that is was very eye opening to look at that story with Persepolis. It really allows you to see the injustices that so many people in different parts of the world have to endure. I think that knowing this background information paired with the autobiographical will help audiences understand the experiences of what injustices looked like during people’s lives.

  7. I like how the comic depicted how life changed, especially for those still in the process of learning and growing up, while developing their own opinions and beliefs, while a nation quickly transitioned away from any trace of western ideas and capitalism. Great job!

  8. This book is meaningful and educational. I understood the culture and history of Iran from this book. It gives me a sense of sympathy for Iranians before revelution. There are many social injustices around Iran. Weaing the veil is unfair for woman. This strict and absurd rule insult and disrespect woman.

  9. I think you included a lot of really useful information on the background of the story and it really helped the viewers understand the Iranian culture more. I also think it helps us to understand the different types of social injustices that occur in different countries other than our own. This information helped me to better understand the reasonings to some of the events in the story. Good job!

  10. As the Iran’s strict rules goes. female are obliged to wear a veil and not allowed to join a party. These strict laws limited female’s freedom and dignity. However, the conservative society never trapped some people who own right values and firmly defend their own right. Like Satrapi’s parents and grandmother, they respect every decisions made by Satrapi and support her to pursue her habits, her belief, her dream. I consider Satrapi’s grandmother as the wise and briliant woman in this graphic book because of her advice. She told Satrapi that always be true to yourself and have dignity. Sometimes Satrapi have doubt on her nationality and not wiling to admit that she is an Iranian, but advice from her grandmother always remind her to be proud of the place where she is from.

  11. Great work summarizing the information about the novel and a back story about Iran that provides a bit of context of author’s actions and her beliefs. I think your summary of the story was excellent. Your presentation is does the job at providing the readers a chance to understand the author’s background.

  12. I think you did a really good job of summarizing the story, and the injustices that took place within it. By explaining the power imbalance between the authorities and the normal people who resided while the revolution was taking place, you can really get a grasp on what they truly went through. Then, by connecting these injustices that took place to Satrapi’s actions shows why she made the decisions that she did. For example, being forced to wear the veil and following religious ideas that she may not have agreed with led to her to wanted to get out of the governments power and try and stop this from happening again not only to her home and family, but also in other areas as well. Overall, I think you did a really good job summarizing the injustices that took place and how that affected Satrapi’s life.
