Text Review – Never Have I Ever

undefinedA super hit and popular Television show called Never Have I Ever, is a comedy and drama story about an immigrated family, with an immigrated mom, a daughter born in the United States and her cousin that came to study in the US, as well as some other guys and friends that come along in the show. The show introduces the family as an Indian-American family with daughter Devi who has many friends but no Indian friends, and her immigrant mother feels that she will lose all her Indian culture and heritage because of that reason. Devi’s father passed away at her young age due to a car accident and the family continues to mourn about her father’s death. In addition, many other characters come along as the sitcom progresses and moves on. The sitcom is very diverse and involves different races, nationalities, religious background, as well as different cultural identities. Throughout the episodes, the family brings out experiences in issues such as discrimination and  to a certain degree, racism.

The characters of Never Have I Ever are extremely diverse, where almost every character pictured is of a different background and some LGBTQ+ characters as well. The show brings out the evils, in other words, the systemic injustice, of different colored people and the stereotypes of Indian people from the perspective of others. The reason I say that this is a systemic injustice, is because of the stereotypes that come from being Indian and having immigrant parents. If the system tried to correct the idea of stereotypes amongst certain races, and people of certain backgrounds, then there wouldn’t be so many problems amongst people of different backgrounds in society today. This show entails Devi trying to fit in and be a normal girl at school, and ends up with two boyfriends, one half Japanese, and one American and then gets caught by her mom. She then gets put into a circle of over-piling stereotypes that Never Have I Ever' Episode Recap: Devi Faces Major Consequences for Her Actions at her because of her mom’s restrictions as an immigrant mom and not really knowing how hard it is for Devi to fit in. I think that the stereotypes and mild racism towards Devi brings out the systemic injustice of discrimination of different types and that is something that needs to be worked on for all of society today. This sitcom does a really good job bringing out the systemic injustice of discrimination, but also showing the diversity among a group of just six/seven people.

Diary of Systemic Injustices in Gender and Social Class Education

It is commonly accepted that one of the major ways to fight the many different systematic injustices in this country is through education which raises awareness of many injustices and guides to the main solution. Though this is the case, and though education is key in helping all the undermined communities struck by inequality to overcome that the inequality, the educational system is tangled in with injustices with gender and social class education. One common systematic injustice that I have seen in today’s society is the systematic injustice that is related to the gender and social class of education.  I grew up in an area surrounded by a lot of gender and class inequality since I also live in a place like Chicago. There are particular schools in the city of Chicago where they have made the price so high that only upper or upper middle class people can afford it. In addition to this, I saw the many different public and private schools which only take a majority of men rather than females in the same education line which really caught my attention.Chicago Public Schools Enrollment Nosedives Again | WBEZ Chicago

This injustice has a huge impact on the well being of many people that don’t earn as much as others, or children that are a part of a very low income family. I also feel that gender equality is very important and both girls and boys should earn the same education. The systematic injustice for this is very unnecessary because both women and men should be treated equally and getting the same education to start out with. The idea that the schools don’t have equality drives a heavy impact into kids who aren’t getting an education but maybe their neighbors. Education is a top priority for many people and not being able to get one is very harmful to their well-being. For this wrong to be righted, we really need to change the way the system is held in place right now.

Why do people not have a say in the way education works here in big cities? Everybody should be treated equally no matter who they are and where they are from. This is a big flaw in the system and drives many people into a bad state of mind which really can cause a lot of injustice among the crowds and causes injustice in the city as well.

Things Fall Apart and Colonization

Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, explores the colonization and deals with missionaries. The main character in Things Fall Apart, deals with a lot of missionaries that come into his own mother’s tribe and he doesn’t really know what to do because they tell him and his entire community, that their beliefs and religion are wrong. They added that they should convert over to another religion of Christianity because this religion only worships one God. In addition to this, Nigerian villages during the beginning of the British colonization so colonization was an important topic in this reading. I think that the biggest and most important overarching themes in this are the different cultures/religions and newer ideas that are being brought in from Britain. I think that the main issue is the missionaries and religion conflict.

The amount that religion can exploit other people is very high and it is something that needs to be addressed especially during the time of colonization. When any nation conquers and exploits another nation, there are always and there will be many long-lasting consequences even though or even if the country regains their independence.  There have been many debates on whether missionaries help or harm and in John Allen Chau’s claim for whether or not missionaries help or harm he said “It isn’t about getting people to believe like we believe,” he writes. “It is about people seeing for themselves, from the Bible, that God has a plan for mankind in general and everyone in particular.”” This statement implies that John Allen Chau is explaining the way that there are other ways to think about what missionaries suggest. They may come across as super harsh and pushy to do everything their way, but the real idea behind them could be what John Allen is talking about here. In this case the answer to the help or harm question would be that it could help depending on the person and harm if the person that is getting talked into by a missionary is actually thinking that they are convincing them to change religions because of the religion that they are. What is your opinion on this?
