Text Review -Anand Kothapalli

For my text review I have decided to analyze the injustice within this Telugu movie.

During the movie, there is a huge amount of injustice toward the poor community. As the movie begins a poor family is invited to a wedding in India. The family can not all attend to their duties so they decide to send the daughter to help with the wedding and be next to the bride. As the preparations of the wedding take place the daughter falls in love with another individual at the wedding who arrives from America.

The story takes a big turn when the mother of the American boy finds out about the love story between the poor family’s daughter and her son. She is enraged and yells at the poor family when the son leaves the wedding to get bangles. The mother states that the poor family is not good enough for her son because of their social status. She claims that her son is from the United States and is very wealthy while the poor family is worthless. The mother also accuses the poor family’s daughter of making her son fall in love with her.

Overall, there is a lot of injustice that takes place during the entirety of the movie. I believe it is unfair for the wealthy family to act privileged and treat the poor family so rudely. This shows that injustice exists everywhere within the world. During the movie the acts of social injustice also clearly show the mindset that any acts of love are perceived in India. This could be a explanation to the reason that India has numerous arranged marriages each year. All in all, the social injustice caused by the wealthy family leads to the son going back to India looking for the girl of his dreams. By the end of the movie the wealthy family also comes to realize they have caused a huge social injustice.

Diary of Systemic Injustices (Footwear) – week 11

As I have gone through this week, I noticed systemic injustice in various situations when shopping for shoes. This week, I went to Tanger Outlets near Columbus Ohio, where I noticed this injustice. As I was roaming through numerous stores I began to notice that the stores catered to more women’s shoes than men’s shoes. This was clearly evident in stores such as Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, DSW, and Sperrys. During my time visiting these stores I noticed that 1/4 of the store was Men’s shoes while 3/4 of the store was women’s shoes. This got me to wonder, why all the stores included a greater number of women’s shoes so I asked the employee.

The employee stated that women’s shoes would sell a lot faster and created a greater revenue for the store. The Nike employee also stated that most women would come and buy multiple pairs of shoes in a short amount of time. This fact had me convinced that many shoe stores conduct acts of systemic injustice without even realizing their mistakes.

I believe shoe stores need to change their view on how they set up their stores. I believe the stores need to be set up equally to include everyone and have options equally for men and women. This can only be done with an equal division of the shoes within the store. I am aware that women bring more profit for the company, however this can also be a result of men having very few options. Overall, I believe this can be easily fixed in all stores nationwide.

John Lewis’s Fight Against Racism (Week 4)

March: Book One (March, #1) by John Lewis

John Lewis was a United States Representative from Georgia. He was a Civil Rights movement activist who made a strong fight for the rights of African Americans. John began protesting at the age of twenty. He fought against social injustices that were faced by African Americans by leading protests along side Martin Luther King Jr. One of John’s accomplishments was leading the “Bloody Sunday” protest which was broadcasted to over 80 cities across the nation: bringing forth awareness. Another achievement of John is that he wrote and published the series March which outlined his experiences with the Civil Rights movement and injustice.

In the first book of March, John writes about the various aspects of the Civil Rights movement. He talks about the effects of slavery in the United States during the 1600s which leads to the topic of Jim Crow laws. John explains numerous other aspects of the Civil Rights movement such as the march on Selma. This protest is described to be a peaceful protest until the marchers were attacked by tear gas by state troopers. As the book progresses, John continues by covering topics such as literacy tests and lynching’s. He ends the first book of three by covering the lunch encounters in Nashville Tennessee.

Overall, John Lewis played a major role in the Civil Rights movement. He advocated for African Americans and educated the public about the campaign of the Freedom Riders through his second book of the March series. In this second book John also covers how black and white social justice activists worked together and crossed various state lines. John also speaks of the church bombing in Alabama to show that young children are not even spared in this social injustice. All in all, John’s actions have led African Americans to advance in society today.
