Diary of Systemic Injustices (Footwear) – week 11

As I have gone through this week, I noticed systemic injustice in various situations when shopping for shoes. This week, I went to Tanger Outlets near Columbus Ohio, where I noticed this injustice. As I was roaming through numerous stores I began to notice that the stores catered to more women’s shoes than men’s shoes. This was clearly evident in stores such as Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, DSW, and Sperrys. During my time visiting these stores I noticed that 1/4 of the store was Men’s shoes while 3/4 of the store was women’s shoes. This got me to wonder, why all the stores included a greater number of women’s shoes so I asked the employee.

The employee stated that women’s shoes would sell a lot faster and created a greater revenue for the store. The Nike employee also stated that most women would come and buy multiple pairs of shoes in a short amount of time. This fact had me convinced that many shoe stores conduct acts of systemic injustice without even realizing their mistakes.

I believe shoe stores need to change their view on how they set up their stores. I believe the stores need to be set up equally to include everyone and have options equally for men and women. This can only be done with an equal division of the shoes within the store. I am aware that women bring more profit for the company, however this can also be a result of men having very few options. Overall, I believe this can be easily fixed in all stores nationwide.

  1. I agree with your post that stores need to be set up more equally but in most shoe stores I go in there is barely a women section. There is a whole wall filled with sneakers for men and a corner for women. This is because they believe men are more into cool athletic sneakers. I have barely ever seen a shoe store that has more shoes for women than men especially if it is sneakers. You can see this in most footlockers, dicks, and any other athletic shoe apparel store.

  2. Thanks for sharing your experience. I notice that shoes stores have way more women shoes than men shoes even including the sneaker sections. Comparing to a regular clothes store, which is evenly separated by gender, shoes store like DSW has way more women shoes. They should address the inequality.

  3. Thanks for sharing your story with us. I have to agree. I noticed couple days ago when I walked to the big clothes store with multiple floors. First floor was just a women section, and second floor was combine men and kids. I can see that injustice and I understand from where you coming from.

  4. I agree with your post. I also noticed that there are many more women’s shoes than men’s shoes in the shoe store. I can see this injustice, and at the same time understand what you think.
