Program Purpose

All students in the MCRP program are required to complete a planning-related internship. This internship requirement is critical to the students’ success in their careers for several reasons.  First, having the opportunity to work as planners while in school helps them understand the realities of planning practice and its various specialties, which helps inform their interests and focus areas of study.  Second, having planning-related internship experience on their resumes helps them get jobs upon graduation.  And finally, internships help students succeed in their careers because they are more prepared for the real world upon graduation.

Internship Process

  1. The Internship Coordinator maintains information of master’s students who are looking for internships.  The information is updated whenever new student information is available.
    • Please sign up for updates using the form on the side of the webpage if you would like to receive an email when new student information is added to the website.
  2. Information on incoming students is typically available prior to their start date, depending on when they are accepted into the planning program (January, May, or August).  The largest portion of our students start in August, so most of them are typically posted online in May – and many are available to start work over the summer.
  3. Employers may look for students at any time during the year on the website and are also welcome to also Post an Internship (link to form).
  4. After reviewing available students, employers typically contact them directly for interviews and hiring.  The Internship Coordinator is available to assist as-needed during the process – please visit the Contact Us page for ways to contact the faculty and staff involved in managing the internship program.
  5. During the interview process, please keep in mind that students may be interviewing with multiple employers, so they may need a few days to make a decision.
  6. Once hired by an employer, interns are required to fill out a short Internship Registration Form and obtain their supervisor’s approval through an online system.
  7. Through the entire length of their internship, interns are required to fill out a short Internship Record Form each semester through an online system in order to document their internship work.
  8. There is an annual OSU event that recognizes the students’ work and their employers; students and employers are invited to attend.
