MCM Planners – BLOG 2

Districts –

the intersection between King and High is seen as the southern start of the University district. When you enter the district you’re welcomed by a public library, tall apartment buildings and book stores.

Edges –

The lines marked into the Turf fields at the rpac are great examples of edges. These lines are used as regulation lines for any sports played on these fields.

Nodes –

Midway on high is seen as a node on campus, it is a popular nightlife spot. To freshmen, midway is the center of nightlife. It is placed right in the center of the university district.

Paths –

Two sidewalks align high street as far as the eye can see. These sidewalks are great paths for off-campus and campus students to walk to and from class without having to get on any bus.

Landmarks –

Mcdonalds is seen as a landmark on campus because it is the location of a recent shooting and because it is the place to go after midway or bulls, at least if you live on north campus. This particular McDonald’s is very modern and is the only McDonald’s located in the university district. It is a popular place for both students and the homeless.

EMOTIONS

FEAR

“EXPELIARMUS” … This is usually what you hear when you walk past Mack Hall. This old building located on south campus gives off Harry Potter vibes. It’s is very old and scary looking, I feel for the students that live there.

PRIDE

who doesn’t love game day? The atmosphere in the show during game day is one of the best experiences a buckeye can get. The pride and joy of being a buckeye is always at an all time high when you step into the show for game day.

BOREDOM

The Thompson library is one of the best places to study on campus. It is also one of the most boring places in the world.

CONTEMPT

JO South is one of the best gyms to workout on campus. It is usually not too packed, and the wait for equipment isn’t that long. You feel contempt and joy walking out of JO South looking thicker than a bowl of oatmeal after a good workout.

HAPPINESS

The new Mirror is lake is breathtaking, it is one of the most beautiful sites on campus. It might be the only place on campus where there isn’t construction. It is a great spot to hangout and do some reading.

Part 1 (Kevin Lynch’s “image of a city”):

i.) Middle of Woody Hayes Drive (By the Shoe)

This path runs on the North side of campus and provides a way to access major landmarks such as “the Shoe” and our very own Knowlton School.

ii. Lincoln and Morrill Towers

The towers provide a sense of an “edge” as that is the farthest west most undergraduate students travel during their time at OSU.

iii. The Shoe Area

The area around the shoe is a perfect example of a district as this area is home to St. John’s Arena, The Schottenstein Center, and of course, The Shoe.

iv. The Union

The Union makes the perfect node as it is the center of student affairs on campus. Everyone knows where the Union is, and can use it as a point of direction.

v. Thompson Statue

The statue of Thompson serves as a landmark as it is a clear way to tell you are in the oval, or more specifically, the Thompson Library.

Part 2 (emotions):

i. Stress

This roadway serves as a sign of stress as traffic can sometimes be unbearable. Not only that, but some drivers cannot drive, and this causes for stressful experiences.

ii. Pride

This Brutus statue housed inside the Union gives students and tourists a sense of school, and state, pride. When you get your picture with this Brutus, you know you have officially been to campus.

iii. Curiosity

The many paths of the Main (and south) ovals that seem to be scattered and thrown together help ensure that students can make their classes on time. But where exactly does every path go? How do you know you are on the fastest one? Is there a straight shot from Point A to Point B? Some of these questions remain unanswered.

iv. Amazement

We believe that bridges are cool. This includes these indoor “Sky walk” bridges too. You do not see these skywalks often, especially not ones made out of scarlet glass.

v. Happiness

Mandy, as well as a lot of students here, can associate at least one happy memory with the Blackwell Hotel on North Campus. A lot of students stay here during orientation, and a lot of family members stay here during visits or commencement.

Reimagined Blog Post 2

Team Reimagined

Sean Deeter, Garrison Glover, Hayden Murphy

As a group we took a picture of the Shoe because not only is it a major part of campus, but it also brings so many emotions to everyone on campus. The emotion we said we feel the most when seeing or talking about the shoe is pride. Pride in our university and pride in being a student at The Ohio State University.

As a group we took a picture of Knowlton Hall because it also gives us a certain type of emotion. Knowlton is a very different building compared to other buildings on campus. We agreed that looking at Knowlton gives us a feeling of curiosity because of how different it is. It might also have something to do with all of us majoring in planning, architecture, or real estate and having a passion for unique architecture/buildings and wondering how there used.

As a group we took a picture of the clock tower because it’s an important landmark on campus. When giving someone directions on north campus we always use the clock tower to guide them to different locations because everyone knows where the clock tower is.

As a group we took a picture of where the oval meets Thompson library because it is an example of an edge. The oval is a place where people walk, study, hangout and where different events happen but overall it’s an open space with no buildings. The edge where the oval meets Thompson library is an example of an edge because it goes from open space to buildings and streets.

We took a picture of the construction near Target on High Street because it gives us a feeling of wonder. We wonder what is going to be built there, how it will incorporate students and if it will make our quality of life better. We wonder how it’s going to use the intersection that splits the two patches of land. It could be a wonderful new area that students could take advantage of, and it’s in a great area across from the Wexner Center.

We also took a picture of the towers, Lincoln and Morrill, because they represent a good node for the university. People go to and from the towers, not just because it is a dorm for students, but because they are a standpoint for the university as a whole. They are great to use for directions and are the center of attention as they stand tall next to the Shoe. Lincoln is also about to open up a new esports area to attract even more people.

We took a picture of the McDonalds as it invokes a few different emotions with recent events. Especially with the American flag also in the picture. With the recent shooting there is a feeling of sadness and anxiety. No one wants to remember those horrible events, but they will stick with everyone affected forever. But there is also a great feeling of hope. Hope that those events will not happen again, hope that those affected can move past it and not have it drag on their life. The American flag is the physical embodiment of hope and it flies in the perfect spot to show people hope after that sad event.

For this piece our group chose Interest as one of our emotions for this picture of where the Ohio Field used to stand. It interests us as a group that an old landmark, and the people who played there, had a long lasting and powerful impact on not only Ohio State Football, but the expansion of the University itself.

For this picture of the Mendoza House, our group chose Curiosity as one of our emotions towards this dormitory. As more student dormitories get made throughout the years and are more up to date with more appliances, it makes us wonder what the living conditions were for people living in them decades ago and how people living in them currently are affected.

We chose path for one of the sidewalk paths of the The Oval. The Oval is a great way of navigating all sides of campus, with it being the heart of the university, and uses sidewalks as spaces for students to walk or ride their scooters, bikes, etc to either side their trying to go to.

Elements

Paths – The long walk in the oval is a main sidewalk students use to travel from Thompson Library to College Road.

Edges – The Olentangy River runs right beside downtown and is a natural separation.

Districts – Fisher College of Business is made up of different buildings and has its own part of OSU.

Nodes – The OSU Union timer is a place that one can meet coming from different directions. It’s on the corner of the High Street and W. 12th Avenue. Different paths meet at this point.

Landmarks – Pomerene Hall is a landmark building at Ohio State. With its distinctive architecture and convenient location it makes for a great study space.

Emotions

Rage – With all of the construction happening on and off campus one can sometimes experience rage and frustration. It seems as if it is a never ending process. Once one project ends, another one begins.

Calm – Mirror Lake is a very serene spot on campus. With the beautiful landscaping and the benches around the lake, it makes for a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the day.

Curiosity – The Number Garden sparks curiosity and raises many questions. Why do these large numbers exist? Who placed them here? What does it all mean?

Awe – The Ohio Statehouse, built in 1839 and completed in 1861, is a massive feat of human engineering and architecture.

Safety – These emergency buttons are located in various spots on campus which help to create a sense of safety in case dangerous events arise.

Path–  This photo shows a path. The path that is being pictured is  N High Street. N High Street is one of if not the most important and popular path around campus.

Edges – This photo of the corner of N High Street and Lane represents the edge of north campus and all of the new dorms. If you continue north you will leave the university district and enter Clintonville and Old North Columbus.

Districts – This photo of the Ohio State sign down by the student union represents a district. The university district in Columbus takes up a large part of northern Columbus and it is very easy to recognize once you have entered the university district.

Node – This photo represents a node. The Ohio State Student Union is one of if not the most recognizable buildings on the Ohio State campus. It is home to three dining options and many other important organization. Many students use the union to orient themselves on Ohio State’s large campus.

Landmark – This photo of the Newport Music Hall on High Street represents a landmark. The Newport is the best place to go for great entertainment night in and night out. The Newport is also very recognizable and hard to miss while walking down High Street.

Fear – This photo of a crosswalk near Donatos Pizza illustrates the emotion of fear. This crosswalk is one of the most unsafe crosswalks on High Street. There is no stop light at the crosswalk so many times cars are unaware of the need to stop for pedestrians.

Anger – This photo shows the emotion of anger. The Barnes and Noble is not only a long walk from campus but when you get there you tend to spend a lot of money on textbooks and other school supplies.

Excitement – This photo of the Gateway movie theater brings many people excitement knowing that soon they will be on the edge of their seat watching their favorite film series and actors. All while enjoying a nice bag of popcorn.

Happiness – This photo of Buckeye Donuts illustrates the emotion of happiness. Whether you stop there in the morning and pick yourself up a fresh donut or get mozzarella sticks after a late night out Buckeye Donuts will not let you down.

Annoyed – This picture of traffic lights and traffic cones on High Street shows annoyance. I cannot remember a time when High Street has not been under construction. The construction closes side walks and makes it a chore to drive down High Street.

Part I: Kevin Lynch’s City Elements

District-

This photo represents a district because it is symbol used to represent the discovery district in central Columbus. It is home to CCAD, The Columbus Museum of Art and The Columbus Metropolitan Library.

Path-

This is representing an edge. This is a photo of High Street and how on one side of High Street is where campus is located and on the other side there are restaurants, night life and housing. Therefore High Street acts as the edge separating these two highly contrasting communities.

Node-

This is representing the intersection between Lane Ave. and High Street. This intersection is a node because it is an essential place on both campus and downtown Columbus that allows for orientation and a sense of direction because both roads are essential to road travel in Columbus.

Path-

The Oval serves as a path on Ohio States’ campus. It is a major means to traveling (by foot) to classes as well as to the student union, Thompson and The Shoe.

The William Oxley Thompson statue is a landmark on OSU’s campus. It allows for students, faculty, and visitors to better understand location amongst the entirety of campus.

Part II: Emotions

Frustration-

This is a photo of the COTA bus system in attempt to show how it disrupts flow of traffic and can be really frustrating. They constantly start and stop and constantly evoke this emotion in  most drivers around the Columbus area.

Pride-

This makes you feel pride to be able to be apart of the something so energetic and exciting. The feeling of being in the shoe is unlike any other feeling and the sense of community that is felt in there is infectious.

Shame-

This is a photo of midway. Sometimes a feeling of shame is often associated with places of night life if the weekend got a little out of control.

Curiosity-

This is the Columbus Convention and curiosity is felt here because a lot of conventions are held here. Conventions can hold tons of unknown information and if one loves to learn new things and expand their minds one often does that a events such as these.

Anxiety-

Often times when heading to Thompson Library it is to study for a big exam finals week or to get a lot of homework. All of which can bring a lot of anxiety along with it.

CCDC Blog 2

Path –

This photo illustrates the path element. The path is located next to the Wexner Center for the Arts. While it is a piece of art, the path is also used by many students, faculty and visitors to travel behind Weigel Hall toward Annie and John Glenn Avenue. It offers a unique and interesting avenue for travel. It is especially important due to ongoing construction in the area, closing other surrounding paths.

Edge –

This photo of the intersection of Lane Avenue and High Street illustrates the edge concept. We selected this intersection because it marks the northern and eastern boundaries of the Ohio State Campus. The City of Columbus is located on the other side of this intersection.

District –

The photo of The Ohio State University sign located on High Street illustrates the district concept. The Ohio State campus constitutes a medium section of the city. The University has its own zip code, a college student atmosphere, student friendly businesses and restaurants, its own police department and transportation system. The campus has characteristics that set it apart from the larger Columbus area.

Node –

The photo of the oval illustrates the node concept. Students routinely use the oval to orient themselves to the campus area. The intersecting series of paths take students to classroom buildings, libraries, and provide a relaxing green space for down time. The oval is centered between the Ohio Stadium and High Street.

Landmark –

The photo of Buckeye Donuts illustrates the landmark concept. Open 24 hours each day, Buckeye Donuts is a staple and a popular destination for many students. Established in 1969, Buckeye Donuts is a “Columbus classic.” It is so well known that students can use it is a point of reference for their location on High Street. Furthermore, the distinctive sign provides a visual clue that can be easily described to those unfamiliar with the area.

Frustration –

The photo of High Street construction illustrates the emotion frustration. The large amount of road construction frustrates both pedestrians and drivers. Pedestrians are forced to cross the street to avoid closed areas of sidewalk. Drivers have fewer lanes, a reduced speed limit, and congested traffic. Maneuvering around the cones and barrels poses additional challenges.

Pride –

The photo of the American flag illustrates the emotion pride. The flag is a universal symbol for pride, independence, and democracy in the U.S. The front window of Page Hall showcases a large American flag. The use of large pillars and clear glass represent transparency and openness, with the prominent flag indicating that the college is proud of their work and their country.

Curiosity –

The photo of the Ohio Union illustrates curiosity. The Ohio Union is one of the most notable buildings on campus. Throughout the year this building hosts club meetings, innovation fairs, and a wide variety of university functions. The large building and its ever changing art exhibits and calendar of events spark curiosity and wonder in students and visitors alike.

Dread –

The photo of the Barnes and Noble bookstore on High Street evokes dread in students. A trip to the bookstore means the start of a new semester. Even worse it means long lines to purchase expensive books and supplies. The architecture is large and imposing, highlighting the immense amount of knowledge the student must master.

Fear –

The photo of the McDonalds’ parking lot evokes fear in students and local residents. The shooting that took place in the early morning hours on August 18, 2019, shows that violent crimes can happen close to home and involve anyone.

Plan OH’s Blog 2

Plan OH

Path – We chose the Knowlton ramps as our path, specifically the one right in the front doors because not only is it the first path you see when you walk in, it leads up to all floors and takes you directly to room 250.

Edge – We chose this image as our edge because it’s what physically separates the sidewalk from the road; pedestrians from motor vehicles.

District – The Union is a blatant sign that you’re on campus: it separates the city from the campus.

Node – We chose to use the South Oval for our node, because there are multiple points that have multiple paths coming off of each one.

Landmark – since we all are the most familiar with campus, north campus specifically, we chose the clocktower as our landmark. It blatantly lets us know that we’re on north campus and helps us to orient ourselves as well.

Curiosity – As we walked through campus, we stumbled upon this obscure monument, and we realized we always wondered what it was and why it’s placed in that specific location.

Frustration – We all know it and we all hate it: construction. There’s construction all through Columbus and all through campus, and every time we encounter it, it frustrates us.

Inferiority – The columns, and the building in general, made us feel inferior to the magnificent buildings and structures around us.

Safety – Seeing the blue lights around campus, especially at night, make us feel safe walking through campus.

Serenity – Thompson Library is quiet and calm and gives us a sense of serenity as we walk through it or by it.
