G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness: I haven’t had the opportunity to engage much in global awareness and cultural activities yet but I do plan to in the future.I hope to be taking a Psychology class on cultural awareness in the future to further my understanding on the need to implement diversity and create safe spaces for different cultures and ethnicities.

Original Inquiry: I’ve had the opportunity to participate in numerous research studies that coincide with my psychology minor and have learned a lot about behaviors in college students. I have also had great conversations with my professors who are part of the research aspect of Athletic Training specifically in concussion research, which have peaked my interest in what I could contribute in research in Athletic Training.

Academic Enrichment: I selected my major Athletic Training because it is one of the careers I intend to pursue in the future. My minor, Clinical Psychology and Individual Differences, however, became of interest to me last semester after taking Psych 1100 as a GE requirement. I’ve always had an interest in pursuing the mental health aspect of an athlete and my interest peaked after taking Psych 1100 and consequently, resulted in a career interest in sports psychology. My major and minor choices have set me up for a commitment to excellence because they are allowing me to explore and connect various interests together where in the future, I can pursue a career dually as an athletic trainer and sports psychologist.

Leadership Development: This year, I’ve been co-leading a bible study in my residence hall. We meet once a week on Sundays and have been able to build a solid community of girls interested in steadily pursuing the Lord. The opportunity to lead a bible study has allowed me to learn how to balance my passions and interests with my career goals. I continue to invest my time with other girls outside of our weekly bible study while still balancing my schoolwork, Mount, and clinicals. I’ve learned the different approaches I can take to lead and make people feel comfortable too.

Service Engagement: I’ve been involved in numerous service projects including Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Huckleberry House, Freedom a la Cart, and kidz2leaders. Even though many non-profit organizations have put service projects on hold due to the pandemic, I have still found myself able to serve communities at home virtually. Through these service projects, I’ve learned a lot about the need for mental health resources around childhood trauma, trauma due to human trafficking, and poverty.

•I believed I have really excelled in Academic Enrichment and Leadership Development. I’ve taken a lot of time to figure out what are my passions and what is important to me in order to connect them in my future aspirations. I believe that your career shouldn’t be something you hate. I want to enjoy and love what I want to do for a living and not just view it as a money maker. Leadership Development has allowed me to learn how to balance my passions with everything else I have going on and the commitments I am willing to make outside of my career that I am also passionate about.

Artifacts

My artifact is a picture of the girls I mentored this past summer at a camp I regularly serve at. The picture was taken as a memory of our cabin family and to commemorate the experiences we had during camp since we are not have contact with the girls outside of camp. I chose this artifact because the girls in this picture hold a special place in my heart as they confided in me about the struggles and trauma they have experienced as a child of an incarcerated parent. I have served at Camp Hope for 4 years as a teen counselor then a cabin leader where I held a leadership role in mentoring middle school aged girls. I learned the value of authority or older  figures in one’s life to help guide you through life. These girls shed light on experiences that I never put into thought and while, I am not in any way a professional to deal with these situations, it helped me understand the importance of seeking out advice and leadership. As a learner, I applied this experience to referring to older and more experienced individuals to  guide me because one cannot rely on just their own knowledge but learns better with other’s knowledge to enhance their own. In the future, I will value the opinions and knowledge of others to further my own.

My second artifact is from my first semester where I participated in a Fall Getaway experience. I attended the getaway with a my bible study/small group and we were able to become very close after this experience. I selected this artifact because it allowed me to grow in my comfort with sharing my experiences with people and challenged me to be a listener before a speaker.I learned that turning off the need to always get a word in builds better connections and relationships. I was able to grow stronger in my faith and also learn to rely on other people who are like-minded and are willing to lend a hand and give advice. This was my first experience where I had to take a step back and not be a leader but let other people pour into me. It’s so hard to give up your independence and I had to trust that I was being put in the right place whether it was at that getaway or being at Ohio State.

My artifact is a book I’ve been reading called How To Be An Antiracist. I’ve always had a passion for talking about racial reconciliation and creating spaces to talk bravely about it. Over the summer, I spent my time reading numerous books to continue to educate myself and re-evaluate history that is misinformed. This artifact has helped me unlock my passion for talking about race relations. As a black woman, I still believe it is important to continue to learn, grow, and progress in learning about race. Through the time I spent reading and learning, I was able to lead a conversation among my fellow peers about racial reconciliation and BLM in the church.

About Me

Hi! My name is Rhyan Creighton, I’m from Atlanta, GA and I am pursuing a major in Athletic Training in the College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. I am a member of the Mount Leadership Society within the University Honors & Scholars Center. Mount is allowing me to combine my love of service with leadership roles by participating in various service opportunities and leadership trainings. In addition to being a Mount Scholar, I serve on two Mount Committees: Summit Committee and Social Change Committee. In high school, I served as a student athletic trainer for fall and spring sports and was a leader in my high school orchestra. I am certified in CPR/ First Aid. When not in class, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching Atlanta Falcons games, and going to the movies. I hope to join  organizations that give me new experiences and broaden my perspective.

At Ohio State, I am looking forward to meeting new people, building long-lasting relationships, finding more service opportunities, and hope to further a career in Athletic Training. I have a love of learning whether it’s about others or myself. I’m a hands-on learner and a good listener.
