Exploring Columbus

On Sunday, October 20th, Joushin and I went to CRMD, an ice cream place on high street.

We enjoyed the ice cream and the fact that we were able to successfully figure out how to take the bus there and back without getting lost.

We learned that buses don’t always follow the routes listed, as our bus turned to go a different way. We immediately got off and ended up walking the rest of the way, which only took a couple minutes. We also learned it’s better to plan ahead, as we originally wanted to go to greaters but it ended up being too far in the amount of time we had set.

I would definitely go back, although it wasn’t my favorite ice cream place, so maybe not often. It was different though, and an experience so I would for sure recommend to friends.

Artifact #1

Tennis has always been a big part of my life, especially through middle and high school, which is why I decided to choose my tennis racket as my artifact. I started the sport when I was 9, falling in love instantly and once I got to middle school, I joined the tennis team and made friends who I’m still friends with today. I love the individuality of the sport and how there is so much strength in the beauty of the game. Even now, I joined Ohio State’s Club Tennis team, so that I can still keep playing the sport I love and meet new people while doing it.

Year in Review

This past year I have grown so much as a person, and learned a lot more about who I am. I met amazing lifelong friends that have all come from different backgrounds and they have given me new perspectives on life. They have encouraged me to work on my strengths and step outside my comfort zone to try new things and be more confident. I have become more mature and started “adulting” and learning how to live on my own, while still asking for help when needed. I have learned what I want in life and what is actually important and what really doesn’t matter. The memories and people and things learned are way more important than most other things.

I really didn’t have expectations for the year, as I really didn’t know what to expect, but looking back I’m happy with where I ended up. Even though there were rough times, it led to where I am today.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.

Apart from taking the typical engineering courses, I have also been taking business classes to work towards my business minor, which is a little different from the education that most engineering students get. I am also in a few extracurricular, including Club Tennis, Society of Women in Engineering, and Students for Sustainable Resilient Communities Club. I am also definitely planning on studying abroad in the future throughout my academic career, which will add a lot to my appreciation and knowledge for diversity and other cultures.

  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

As a first year student, I haven’t had many research opportunities, but I am planning on pursuing some later on in my academic career, including going to graduate school. Being a part of the scholars program, I am in scholars specific classes, such as Fundamentals of Engineering and the Scholars Seminar.

  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

I choose the Aerospace Engineering major, because I love engineering and problem solving and coming up with solutions, but am also fascinated by space and the design of rockets/shuttles and learning how they work in an environment without gravity. I choose my business minor because I am also interested in finance and management and am potential considering managing a part of an aerospace company/organization. I have chosen classes that relate to my major/minor, as well as classes that sound interesting and that I can learn a lot from.

  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Throughout the Fundamentals of Engineering classes, we have worked in a couple different teams and have had opportunities to be a leader and organize the team and make sure everyone is on track. I have also been involved in multiple community service events, including a service trip to Louisiana building houses, which contributes to my work ethic and wanting to succeed/create a team that works well together. I have also had a couple different jobs, some held at the same time I had classes, and I have learned how to balance academics, work, and everything else going on in my life, which is a great skill to have for the future.

  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

I have been involved in a few different community service events since coming to Ohio State, one of which was the day of service, in which we went around Columbus helping different places in the community. I also did a Buck-I-Serve trip, in which we went to Lafayette, Louisiana and worked with Habitat for Humanity to build a couple houses. It was an experience that I’ll never forget and I meet amazing people and learned a lot of new skills. I would for sure do another Buck-I-Serve trip during my time here.
