Year in Review

Only a few months into my undergraduate career I can already see significant changes in who I am as a person compared to who I was before freshman year. The two most dramatic changes I’ve seen in myself have been an increased independence and vastly improved intrapersonal skills. I knew I would gain independence as I transitioned into college life but I didn’t truly grasp how much. Of course I realized I’d have to rely on myself to make important decisions regarding my major, financial decisions, and what I choose to be involved in but I overlooked some of the seemingly less significant areas where I would need to develop independence. Simple tasks like cleaning and eating are very different now that mom isn’t here to make sure I’m doing what I need to. Although I must say I’ve become a master of folding and ironing my own clothing. The other aspect of my life which I’ve noticed the largest change is my ability to reach out and socialize with people. Throughout high school I had established a small community of friends and I rarely ventured outside of my small world. Over the course of this first semester I’ve been exposed to more cultures and ideas than I have over my entire life. At first it was shocking and quite honestly a bit uncomfortable. However, I learned to adapt and reach out to others to learn about their worlds and tell them about mine. I have overcome my shyness and I am now willing to expose myself to situations that my old self never would have embraced. If these changes occurred over such a short amount of time there is no possible way of anticipating how much I’ll change by the end of my college career. As I expose myself to more challenges and possibilities in the future I will continue to expand my independence and social skills. I’m thrilled and so blessed to have the opportunity to face further character development throughout the upcoming years.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I intend on one day working in a healthcare profession. Studying abroad would help me to learn about the healthcare of different countries and even lead me to better understand that of the United States. Learning about other cultures and languages could potentially help bridge any gaps between myself and patients. I hope to study abroad and potentially minor in a language. I hope to travel to countries and cities with rich historical backgrounds and cultures as well as areas in need. Volunteering in another country would help me develop skills for a future in healthcare while expanding my understanding of the world and its people.

Original Inquiry: The ability to take part in research is one of the main aspects of college which I have been most excited to experience. I am extremely interested in how the human body functions and how it undergoes different processes. In particular, I am interested in how the brain works and how different factors and experiences influences how it works. Any research project that could potentially improve our understanding of health and help patients is one that I could see myself taking part in.

Academic Enrichment: I plan on filling my schedule with challenging and rigorous curriculum to challenge myself and push my mind beyond its limits. I would like to pursue a minor that compliments my major by focusing on a certain subject in a more in depth manner to help myself gain a better overall understanding.

Leadership Development: I hope to find an organization to which I would like to dedicate my time. As my experience in the group grows I will pursue the opportunity to gain a leadership position within that group. In addition, I would love to find a church or religious group on campus and eventually tale part in leading bible studies or other events.

Service Engagement: Throughout my undergraduate experience and beyond I intend to serve my community and make a positive impact in the lives of those around me. I will take part in different service organizations such as Buckeyethon. Also, I intend to join a sorority organization to expand my opportunities to take part in service projects for both local and global organizations.
