About Me

I am majoring in linguistics which has interested me for years, and I plan to continue studying linguistics in grad school. My hope is to help with preserving endangered and dying languages across the world. I am also interested in anthropology and world history.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness

I plan to fulfill this goal by taking classes that focus on other cultures and their unique differences, and by hopefully studying abroad. This semester I am taking a cultural anthropology class in which I am learning about how every culture is different in its own way and that no culture is better than another. I am also taking Chinese this semester. I plan to take more Chinese classes in the future and to take classes that focus on Chinese culture. I hope to study abroad to actually be immersed in another culture and language. A great experience for me would be to spend time in China to learn more about the culture, language, and rich history of the country. Overall, I am excited to learn more about the world and all the interesting people that live here.

Original Inquiry

I plan to do research, hopefully in linguistics. I will seek out any research opportunity that is of interest to me. Although I don’t know much about how research works, I plan to utilize resources that the school provides to learn more.

Academic Enrichment

I chose to major in linguistics because it is something that has interested me throughout high school. In my first semester I have made sure to take honors level courese or 3000 level classes. I chose my cultural anthropology class because it ties into linguistics through linguistic anthropology. I chose to take Chinese because I wanted to take a non-European language, because it is very interesting to me, and knowing another language will be of great help in my linguistics studies. I plan to go to grad school and continue my studies in linguistics. I will make sure my courses reflect this by taking many challenging linguistics courses. Even when not taking courses for my major, I will take honors level or 4000 level or higher classes.

Leadership Development

I am currently involved with the sci-fi club, linguistics club, and academic team. The linguistics club relates to my goals by allowing me to learn more about linguistics and to establish myself in the community. I will seek out leadership positions in these organizations once I have more experience and I have spent more time at the university.

Service Engagement

I am not yet involved with any service activities, but I plan to be throughout my time at OSU. I did a large amount of service as a Boy Scout and as a community member before I came to college, and I have no intentions of stopping now.
