Year in Review

I am a much different person ending my Sophomore year than I was starting it in August. The paths that I have taken this year have allowed me to meet some truly incredible people. I am so grateful for everything that I got to participate in and all the people that I had the privilege to meet.

In October, I joined the Student-Alumni Council and through this experience I have been able to connect with the Ohio State Alumni Association, help put on events around campus to engage current students and reach out to alumni. We just recently put on the annual Buck-I-Run 5k Glow Run through campus and it was SAC’s biggest run to date with nearly 700 runners. It has also led me to other opportunities such as the role of Homecoming Court Coordinator for next fall during OSU’s 150th anniversary homecoming celebration.

I also participated in the Exchange Partner Program through the Office of International Affairs and I was paired with a student from Germany on exchange to Ohio State for Fall semester. We were able to learn a lot about each other’s culture. Through the program I got to coordinate some really fun events for all of the exchange partners such as a thrift store shopping trip, a group to attend Highball Halloween Party, movie nights, and lunch outings. I hope to one day work on a global scale and I think building an appreciation and understanding of different cultures is extremely important in achieving that goal.

I learned how to interview with companies for internships and I got to learn a lot about rejection this fall as I searched for my summer job. I learned about the importance of maintaining not only connections in my professional network but also making sure that I am dedicating time to personal relationships.

However, I think that the biggest learning experience for me this year was just in my dorm room. I have had three different roommates over the course of the year. It has been challenging because that’s three different people that I have had to learn to co-exist with. All three of them came from walks of life different than my own. My first roommate was a transfer student from a branch campus and the youngest of a family with much older siblings. We had very different political, religious, and worldviews. And we didn’t make it work well. I ended up moving and I kind of felt like I was giving up and I hated that I couldn’t make it work. Looking back, it was what I needed to do. I moved into an eight person suite and I love my roommates. It truly has been a learning experience finding a balance between eight people in a small space and it has taught me patience and discipline more than anything else I have done this year.

Overall, I think that my second year at Ohio State has provided a lot of opportunities for growth and I am excited for this summer when I get to participate in the Operations Global Lab in China and work as a Business Analyst Intern for US Bank in Cincinnati.

Artifacts

My artifact is my name tag for my position as an Office Assistant in the Blackburn Haverfield Complex. Applying for the position was one of the first things that I did when I moved in on campus. I have met a lot of people through this job and become friends with many of my coworkers. Working with someone in the middle of the night forges bonds and creates friendships. My cousin was an OA when she lived on campus and she was the one who recommended that I apply.

The time commitment to the job has really helped with my time management skills. I also have improved my communication, response,

and activator skills through planning programs, liaising with Hall Council and working with people under a deadline. This campus job has been a big part in shaping my OSU experience thus far and I look forward to continuing it this spring and, hopefully, next year.

Introducing Me

Hi! My name is Maddie. I am a first year undergraduate student in the Max M. Fisher College of Business specializing in Marketing and International Business. I am planning to add a minor in Economics.

I’m from Cincinnati, OH and graduated from Loveland High School. Go Tigers!  In addition to my studies, I am involved in the Business Scholars Program, a two-year cohort meant to develop leaders and innovative students within the Fisher College of Business. On campus I am involved with the Undergraduate Business Women’s Association, Cru at Ohio State, and I work in the Blackburn-Haverfield Residence Hall Complex as an Office Assistant.

I spend my free time reading and watching Netflix. I am a Criminal Minds enthusiast and my favorite author is Kristen Hannah. In high school I was involved in the drama department, track & field, student council, Turning Point USA, and various rec sports for fun. I love going to Reds games during the summer and concerts on the lawn at Riverbend Music Center.

My long term goal is to be a marketing executive at a respected company. To get there I plan to focus on my studies and will pursue my Masters in Marketing and Business Administration after completing my undergraduate degree.
