Zoom Etiquette

The academic web conferencing solution for Ohio State is known as CarmenZoom. As a student you might have courses that use this tool but you also can use your OSU login credentials to create your own online meetings.

First Steps

Even if you have not yet used the tool for classes or meetings, make sure to log in through CarmenZoom ahead of time to make connecting in the future more seamless. Make sure you are logged in through https://osu.zoom.us/, rather than a free Zoom account, so you are not limited to 45-minute calls. Adding a Profile Picture (optional)

Add a picture of yourself to your Zoom profile, so others can see your face even when your camera is off. This makes it easier for your classmates and instructors to identify who is on the Zoom call and who is talking.

Zoom Etiquette

Treat your Zoom classroom just like you would a physical classroom – with respect. As always, all aspects of the Code of Student Conduct are in effect this semester.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re in an online classroom setting:

  • If possible, use headphones when speaking on a Zoom call. Your sound quality will be much clearer.
  • Mute your microphone when you’re not speaking – especially if you’re in an environment with background noise.
  • Wear clothes. Learning at home, in your dorm, or away from campus can make for a more relaxed environment, and while you should be comfortable, your Zoom meetings are still class, so dress accordingly.
  • Set up a learning environment for yourself that is free of as many distractions as possible.
  • Think about what’s behind you when you’re on camera. Could your roommate need to change their clothes? Are your siblings having a pillow fight? When possible, choose a camera angle – such as having your back to a wall – that reduces distracting background activities.
  • If your device allows for it, choose a virtual background to cover up these background activities. Ohio State has created a number of Zoom backgrounds to remind you of campus. O-H…
  • If you’re having internet bandwidth issues, there are a few things you can do to improve your connection. Make sure your HD video is turned off in settings, mute your audio, and, if necessary, turn off your camera or dial in audio-only on your phone. If your instructor has a camera-on policy, communicate with them via chat so they understand why your camera is off and suggest alternative ways to demonstrate your engagement in class.
  • Don’t drink alcohol or use illegal substances in class.
