Columbus To Do List #2

In exploring Columbus on my to do list I stumbled across low price student tickets for the upcoming Columbus Crew home game. I had never been to a soccer match before so I figured I would give it a try since it cost almost nothing for me to go. The stadium is not too far away from campus but I had an upperclassmen friend provide transportation for me and a couple friends interested in watching the game. The match was great and they ended up winning 2-1 if I remember the exact score correctly. Overall, I would say that it was a great experience that brought me outside of my normal routine and made me do something that I now have become generally interested in.

My final thing I did on my To Do List was biking around Columbus. While not isolated to one area, me and a fellow scholar from a different department explored a lot of what Columbus had to offer. We decided to take the bike trail located on campus and bike all the way to Columbus on a warm Saturday. There was a football game going on so the path was barely populated. We went to many different places German Village, COSI, several Olentangy Bridges, and the Clippers Stadium. Biking on such populated roads was often intimidating for me but Columbus is very biker friendly with its bike lanes and other vehicles were generally respectful to people on bikes. Overall, this was my favorite experience as it opened many doors to many other experiences that I will make in the coming weeks.

From all of my experiences I have recorded, I would have to say that biking around Columbus was one of my favorite experiences from these assignments (if you would even call them that). I would say that I learned a lot about my city not only in my biking endeavors, but my other experiences as well. I have learned that Columbus is a more welcoming and open community that is friendly and respects everyone. I have not seen this in any other city and I am basically an newcomer to this city as well, yet I fit just right in. In the future, I will definitely continue my bike explorations around Columbus and possibly go inside the places I have visited such as COSI. Though I may have to take the COTA bus while the weather gets colder. I would definitely recommended biking around the city to anyone who wants to “see whats out there” as well as go to sporting events with friends or even try some food you never had before. The possibilities are endless, I would tell someone to just do something as often times you are better off, Columbus is a very exciting city. I am glad I have been given the opportunity of this assignment as I may have had these experiences which I would believe would be a major loss for myself.

Columbus To-do List

To-Do

  1. Try nice food restaurant within Columbus
  2. Go to Columbus Crew game
  3.  Bike around the city

I chose this list for this semester because it really encompasses many aspects of life in Columbus. It does not just limit me to one particular area, I can explore them all and find what I enjoy to do; things that interest me. I am a major fan of food, especially food from other cultures, so I really want to find a nice restaurant to eat with friends. I chose a Crew game, because I am like soccer but I am yet to see this team. I chose biking because it is a good way to exercise as well as explore all Columbus has to offer that I don’t even know of yet. I have already visited several parks so I am wanting to expand away from this by including these locations in this list.

1. Try nice food restaurant within Columbus

So for this event, I decided to go to Ted’s Montana Grill near the Columbus Blue Jackets Stadium. I can say that I was a little uncertain at first before coming to the restaurant because I had never had a bison burger before which was their signature dish, but I had to try it. It would not have felt right if I did not try it. Overall, it was a good experience, though I did not particularly like the variant of the bison burger that I tried, but this was not a result of the cooking, but rather my taste (and my distaste for bleu cheese). Though, I will say that I will go back with my family one day when they visit town. I enjoyed hanging out with my HE friends and can say I really appreciated my timme there.

Artifacts

Artifact 1

These sunglasses are what defined me my senior year of high school. One of my largest purchases I had made to date with my own money, I felt that it was an opening to my adult life where I could finally be independent; I can make my own choices. And I wore them, a lot. The glasses are the colors of blue, black, and white, the colors of my school, so they went well with the many sporting events I watched and participated in. When I look at them, I remember all my high school experiences. Being with friends, having fun, and many more personal details are included with these sunglasses. The define me by my enjoyment to be around people and my first steps towards independence as an adult for which I still value deeply. Unfortunately, the glasses are not worn as much as they used to as the days get colder, but the memories connected to them I will not forget.

Artifact 2

What may seem to most as just a simple hat actually means much more to me. I purchased this hat one week after being at OSU. It was a gift from my parents before I would not see them again for several months. I have wore this hat many times since its purchase and I have seen it as a symbol of my transition into a college, my new self on the path to success. I wear this hat all the time when biking, go to class, or hanging out with friends. I have begun to grow attached to my personality as I have begun to wear it more often. It is a symbol of my college experience, defining my love to do new things and my passion to do much bigger things in my life, similar to the reasons I went to this university in the first place. I hope this hat will continue to be a part of my memories at this school and many more will be made while wearing it.

About Me

My name is Ethan Cox, a 19 year old undergraduate student currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the Ohio State University.

I have interests in mechanical systems such as cars and the automobile industry, but also have interests in petroleum engineering for which I also plan to minor in the future. I am currently a member of the EcoCar 3 project team at OSU sponsored by General Electric where I work to make the most fuel efficient vehicle possible within a given set of constraints.

I currently am employed at Midwestern Plumbing Services during breaks from school where I am tasked to aid in the installation of plumbing systems on project sites and construction zones.

I have goals of earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering by 2021 while earning work experience outside of the classroom with companies in the form of co-ops during breaks from classes, or otherwise in unique situations.

I come from a small town in Batavia, Ohio, east of Cincinnati for which I have lived most of of my life before attending college in Columbus. I am a high honors graduate from my high school where I earned the IB Diploma and several AP credits. I am a recipient of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. I believe that family is an important factor in my life and are greatly responsible for the situation I am in today.

Strengths:

  1. Achiever- I want to strive to being the best for both me and the people around me. I believe that it is essential for one to continue to try and become the best possible person they can become.
  2. Deliberative- I believe that the world has too many variables to predict what will happen next. I find that it is best to take everything the world throws at you from a perspective that can analyze the problem for what it is and how to solve it.
  3. Analytical- Many things in this world should not go unquestioned, it is a major issue in the media today. I believe that everything should be taken with a grain of salt and questioned rather than merely accepting notions that could be purely incorrect.
  4. Focus- Being able to focus on one essential task is important in the modern world. Individual goals should be taken into great attention till great breakthroughs are made in achieving them.
  5. Restorative- Fixing and finding solutions are enjoying to me. I find them to be a challenge that keeps my mind active and focused in difficult situations.
