G.O.A.L.S. Year 2

  1. This past summer, I participated in a Study Abroad trip to Brazil. I have an internship in Frankfurt, Germany this coming summer through the U.S. State Department. I plan on continuing with the State Department’s Student Internship Program in other locations throughout the world in the future. My dream is to work in the U.S. Foreign Service, and I think I’ve made great inroads towards that goal.
  2. I have made some thought on how I want my Undergraduate Research Thesis to progress – that it will hopefully be centered in 20th century Eastern Europe. I have also interacted with the creations of other students. I experienced A Study in Rain and Light, a radical imagining of synth sound and haunting visuals in one of the motion and sound labs on campus.
  3. Adding my second major has added a crunch time factor to my degree – I need to take very specific classes in order to graduate in four years. My two majors are perfect background for a career in the Foreign Service, and I am taking the Honors version of every prerequisite, GE, and required course that is available in order to pursue my own academic enrichment.
  4. As a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band, I interact with some of the most dedicated students on campus on a regular basis. We solve problems collectively, and though I do not yet hold a leadership position, I hope to do so in the future. Music is my passion, and TBDBITL allows me to practice it in the best college marching ensemble in the country.
  5. Through marching band, I have participated in multiple service-oriented activities. I have played at Honor Flights for U.S. Veterans, interacted with the School for the Blind, and performed for the Gladden House, which is a charitable organization in Columbus. Going forward in band I will continue to do these things, and if I can ever find an ongoing service opportunity that fits in my schedule I will not hesitate to make it part of my service.

Discussion Question #4

Never before have I lived in a small space with three other people for longer than two weeks of summer camp. The Ohio State University has given me the perfect opportunity to fill in that gap in my experience. Coming to terms with three new people, their living and sleep habits, and how they deal with conflict has been… eye-opening, to say the least. I have always been good at avoiding conflict (being extremely non-confrontational), but I have learned so far that it is much easier to bring up issues in a non-antagonizing way than to let them fester and to let resentment grow under the surface. While I am not suddenly a magic peacemaker, I have gotten to understand the perspectives of people who grew up in different areas, with different ideas of how the world should work, and with different thought processes and experiences. Over the rest of my time living with roommates, I hope that I can get even better at mediating conflict and solving problems quickly, efficiently, and fairly. These skills are applicable far beyond my current living arrangement; they will help with living with others in the future, even with a significant other, and I can apply them at home even while I’m on break. My time in the workplace with also be rife with conflict to solve, and the ability to mediate will be an extremely powerful addition to my workplace skills.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I already have experience traveling abroad to learn about other cultures and spread my own. Using Ohio State’s resources, I can continue my overseas experiences by Studying Abroad multiple times. I plan on studying in Brazil with the Music school as well as in Germany or Poland with History in mind.

Original Inquiry: My plan to pursue Original Inquiry is to complete an Honors Research Thesis in History for my major. This will allow me to get experience in undergraduate research as well as contribute to a field of knowledge that I am passionate.

Academic Enrichment: Because I am an Honors student, I am already encouraged to take an acadmically enriched course load. However, I plan to further this by taking more Readings and Research Seminars in History than are required by my major.

Leadership Development: After having experience in high school as a leader in the Marching Band as a Drum Major and in Concert and Jazz as a principal player, I plan to further my development by continuing to lead, both in music and out. I am the principal tuba in Collegiate Winds already and will have opportunities in other bands and organizations to lead as I proceed through my college career.

Service Engagement: I hope that I will be able to tie Service into my Study Abroad opportunities. It is my intention to make as much of an impact on the places I travel to as those places make on me. Inside the country, I plan to pursue volunteer opportunities with an organization called Virginia Music Adventures, which I have already worked with as a student, a volunteer, and a teacher.
