OVERVIEW
OEIS instructional designers can provide course design assistance to our faculty through both consultations and extended course design projects. This page describes the kinds of course design projects available to college of pharmacy faculty along with key deliverables from each project.
WHAT IS COURSE DESIGN?
Review the following overview video about the course design process from The Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning’s Teaching at Ohio State course featuring our own college’s Dr. Maria Coyle:
COURSE DESIGN CONSULTATIONS
Meet one-on-one with an OEIS instructional designer to discuss any of the following course design topics:
- Course end-of-teaching debriefs & review of student feedback
- Course reviews in relation to CQI efforts
- Holistic syllabus reviews including:
- course outcomes and assessment review,
- course technology use and accessibility, privacy, and copyright considerations; and
- schedule and pacing of activities
- Dissemination of educational innovations as a result of course design projects and consultations
COURSE DESIGN PROJECT TYPES
OEIS instructional designers can provide assistance in three different kinds of course design projects. The major differentiators of each project are time to complete and scope of work. Throughout these course design projects, there will be an opportunity to partner with an OEIS educational technologist to identify and, potentially, produce instructional multimedia content. If you are interested in initiating a course design project, please email our team at cop-design@osu.edu.
For best results, course design projects should use the following guidelines:
- Be initiated at least one term before the course launches;
- Plan for weekly 1:1 meetings between faculty and the instructional designer to provide updates on progress and sustain momentum;
- Plan for work to be completed between each course design meeting.
Read about each project type below and their key deliverables:
Course Developments
A course development encapsulates the full design and planning of a brand, new course (e.g., a new elective course for the PharmD program). These projects take approximately 14 weeks or the length of a semester.
See Course Development projects key deliverables
Key Deliverables:
- Course alignment map (contains mapping of assessment, sequence of activities, learning activities)
- Outcome/Objective development
- Syllabus/Schedule development
- Importing of carmen template
- Mock-up basic carmen structure of course
- Production of course intro and instructor bio video (as needed)
- Production of interactive multimedia (if applicable)
- Project handoff documentation
Course Re-designs
A course re-design typically means a change in modality (e.g., in-person to distance learning), change in learning objectives, or change in scope of course. These projects take between 10 to 14 weeks depending on the extent of the re-design.
See Course Re-design projects key deliverables
Key Deliverables:
- Update or Create alignment map (contains mapping of assessment, sequence of activities, learning activities)
- Revise outcomes/objectives as needed; submit to appropriate curriculum committee
- Syllabus/Schedule revision
- Importing of carmen template
- Mock-up basic carmen structure of course
- Production of course intro and instructor bio video (as needed)
- Production of interactive multimedia (if applicable)
- Project handoff documentation
Course Revisions
A course revision can entail check-ups on the course (e.g., academic integrity, accessibility, and copyright reviews), updates to assignments and assessments, the addition of new interactivity/engagement elements, and/or general smaller scale modifications. These projects can take between 8 and 12 weeks depending on the needs of the course revision.
