LeFevre Fellows

Newark Service Scholars (LeFevre Fellows)

The LeFevre Fellowship is a prestigious award for students with strong academic records who would like to provide service to the community. Students selected for the award receive a $1,500 scholarship (toward tuition in fall and spring), enroll in 2 credits of service-learning coursework during the academic year, and perform 60 hours of community service. Along with occasional one-time service activities such as helping with a river clean-up or Special Olympics, LeFevre Fellows help with several long-term programs:

SparkPE: LeFevre Fellows lead exercise classes for elementary school students in the Newark City school district, using the SparkPE curriculum. SparkPE bases it program on research showing that regular exercise improves students’ academic success. The Fellows will also incorporate curriculum on healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.

KidsTech: LeFevre Fellows will work with faculty to create workshops for children and parents alike at The Works. While the children enjoy lectures on various subjects from brains to bee, they will also learn about college. Kidstech provides a way for parents and kids to talk about college from an early age.

Students with a college GPA of 3.2 and enrolled full-time at Ohio State Newark are eligible to apply, as are incoming freshmen with strong academic records. To be considered, write a personal statement of 400-500 words explaining your interest in providing service to the community. Describe any meaningful volunteer or service work in which you have participated, how working in the community would benefit you personally or academically, and what you consider the purpose of civic engagement. We also welcome, but do not require, letters of recommendation from teachers or people representing groups to whom you have provided service.

Priority deadlines for applications for 2018-19 is April 15. Please email your essay and any letters of recommendation to Willie Ho at ho.492@osu.edu.
