We’ve still got room in several Honors courses if you’re looking to add to your fall schedule.
- Rob Hughes’ Introduction to Fiction (English 2261H) will be a lively and engaging course (and fulfill the GE lit requirement). Times: TR 9:35-10:55 am.
- Lucy Murphy’s Native and Newcomers course (2750H) investigates the history of U.S. immigration and migration and is always fascinating: MW 12:45-2:05. This course fulfills the GE for historical study and diversity/soc div in the US course and is cross-listed in WGSSt.
- Angela Bryant’s Inside-Out: Corrections course (Soc 2211) is truly unique, and has won multiple awards. This class is held weekly at the Southeastern Correctional Complex in Lancaster, and includes not only Newark campus students but incarcerated individuals. This is a unique way to learn about criminal justice, with insight from individuals who understand crime and justice from a different perspective. Class is held Wednesdays from 11:30-4:30 (including travel time in carpools to/from SCC); a few Wednesday classes will be at Newark for Newark campus students alone. Contact Dr. Bryant (bryant,74) or your advisor to enroll.
Don’t forget about some of our 1-credit courses that provide opportunities to engage with the community:
- Learn about the Newark Earthworks with Prof. Dick Shiels and lead school tours(A&S 1102H, meets the 1st 7 weeks from 1-3 on Fridays). Contact Dr. Shiels for more information at shiels.1@osu.edu.
- Become trained as a peer mentor (A&S 3191) with Prof. Laura Younger and provide academic coaching to fellow students and possibly middle school students (Fridays 2:30-3:20). This is a great opportunity for students interested in careers as psychologists, social workers, or teachers–or for students who would benefit from learning the organizational/planning skills that peer mentors provide. Contact Dr Younger at younger.18@osu.edu for more information. Also contact Dr Younger if you’d like to work with a peer mentor to improve your study skills.
