We are applying for a grant from State Farm to create a new service learning project to enable Newark campus students to mentor/coach high school students who have problems with planning and organization (what are called executive function skills). The idea: train Newark campus students, with input from a coaching specialist; have students practice with each other; deploy them once or twice a week to work with high school students for 30-60 minutes. My belief is that both the coach and coached students will benefit from learning and practicing these skills. The grant deadline is May 1 and I want your input on the idea. Join me and others for a brainstorming session and the meal is on me (bagels and coffee and fruit if early, Jimmy Johns otherwise). Brief stopovers at these breakfast/lunches are welcome (no need to stay for long), and I’d like your input even if you’re not able to be involved in the program if it gets going. Non-students are welcome of course.
