A few things puzzle me. Can you post below or email me in response to the following questions, at your convenience?
1. The Honors courses aren’t filled for spring, although we have far more Honors students than seats in Honors classes. If you’re not taking Honors in spring, is it because (a) the classes you need to fulfill your GEs aren’t there (b) you plan to fulfill your GEs with courses other than the ones we created as Honors courses for spring (c) you’re concerned that Honors classes will be too challenging with your other coursework and obligations (d) you didn’t have a good experience with your fall Honors courses.
If there’s a course you would love to see in Honors version, please note that in comments below (and respond to others’ comments so we get a sense of how many people are looking for that course for next year)
2. I’ve heard students say they didn’t realize they were in Honors. Incoming freshmen accepted into Honors received their notices of acceptance by mail. If you did not know you’d been accepted, please tell me if you (a) are positive you didn’t receive the notice via mail (b) it’s possible you didn’t open yet another envelope and therefore missed the notice.
On that note, would an email be preferable? Do you check your OSU email address after being accepted to Newark (but before starting classes?).
I’ve had a great experience in my current honors courses, but next semester there was only one GE that was offered that I needed as a part my GE requirements, but it couldn’t fit into my schedule.
I wanted to take an honors course but all of the honors courses offered do not fulfill any of my GE’s and I would be wasting time and money taking them. More need to be offered with a variety of times if students are to continue with it.
These are really helpful responses–thanks. We try to offer one class in each of the GE categories each semester, but when they don’t fill, it’s hard to then make the case for adding more classes.
I haven’t signed up for any honors courses next semester because this semester I have finished all of my requirements for honors courses, and next semester is going to be really busy for me…I start the methods in the education program next semester and I have an independent study in which I will be writing a research paper for Dr. Warner. I have only one course that could be honors and is not specific to education, and that’s “the world since 1914” with Dr. Mengus.
I ended up taking an embedded course instead of an honors course because the honors courses either didn’t fit any of my GE’s or they were unavailable because of other classes I had taken.
I know that I, personally, did check my osu email before classes, and a notification email would have been nice. I think the only reason I knew I was in honors was because of my scholarship letter.
I would love to take more honors courses but unfortunately the classes I need/want to take in the spring are not offered as Honors.
This is very useful, thanks everyone. Anyone else want to comment?
