Newark students on the campus’ first-ever study abroad to Quebec, Canada

  • The application is easy–you’ve still got time to be part of this course. Email me with any questions.

The  May course includes 10 days in Quebec, Canada  (ASC 2798.04). Students wil spend 10 days in Montreal (the cultural capital of the province), Ottawa (the capital of Canada) and lovely Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These are historic, enticing cities — where you can practice your French (or learn a few phrases). All majors and levels are invited to apply.

  • The 3-credit course (ASC 2798.94) offers GE credit (open option/education abroad). Follow the link in this paragraph for the program sheet, which includes all the information about the course and how to apply.
  • If you’re full-time in the spring, you will not be charged for the 3 credits of May tuition. You will have to pay a program fee (to cover a small portion of travel and lodging expenses) of $800. This may be covered in part by financial aid and scholarships. In fact, if you’re accepted, your will be eligible in most cases for increased financial aid, which can help cover the program fee. In some cases, my office offers further scholarships for students who cannot cover the program fee.
  • Apply to the the program through Buckeye Link (click the study abroad tab in Academics).
  • Contact me or Rob Hughes (hughes.1021) or Jen Anthony (anthony.212) with any questions. We will be checking our mails regularly tonight and tomorrow for last-minute questions.
  • For more on study abroad options, check out the study abroad section of the Office of International Affairs web site.

Last chance for priority scheduling, spring break trip

Register now. Windows opens tomorrow for non-Honors sophomores and next Monday for freshmen. As an Honors student, you have priority scheduling, but need to act now to take advantage of it.  Tomorrow I will open up some Honors courses to non-Honors courses, so register now before they fill. If you still haven’t figured out your schedule for spring, Contact Linda Mathews in Advising: mathews.98@osu.edu; 366-9257.

Not finding classes in the GE categories you need? Comment below. This will help me keep track of what we need to add for next year. And remember that 4000-level courses count as Honors courses if taken in your freshman/sophomore year.

The BeatsConsider ASC 1102H (1-credit, pass/fail coures). Don’t overlook the great 1-credit Honors courses available in spring (Arts & Sciences 1102H). These are meant to be engaging, low-pressure courses that allow you to explore interests and get to know your professors.

Our fantastic English professor David Ruderman is teaching a 1-credit course on the idealistic writers of the 1960s called the Beats. Dr. Ruderman is a musician and poet and he’ll get you excited about Jack Kerouac and the Beats. Here’s his poster.

Earthworks courses. Also check out the 1-credit courses on the Earthworks by Dick Shiels. You’ll learn about these extraordinary prehistoric sites right here in Newark.

  •  Learning About Ohio Earthworks: The first 7-week course  will be focused on learning about Ohio Earthworks and efforts to achieve World Heritage status. Students will attend 7 sessions  from a list that will include: 5 Class sessions: 1:00 – 3:00 PM January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 2015;  3 guest lectures on Tuesdays 4 PM;  2 Baker House lunches on Wednesdays 12:00-1:30.
  • Teaching the public about Ohio Earthworks: The second term will be open to all Honors students, or to any student who has completed the autumn quarter ASC 1102H course or the Learning About Ohio Earthworks course. Students will attend 5 hours of class and contribute 10 hours of service: 5 Class sessions: 1:00-3:00 PM on Fridays beginning March 6; service opportunities will include assisting with:   leading K-12 tours of the Great Circle in April, preparing for the Octagon Open House the first Sunday in April, gathering materials for tours and the Open House and a Web site.

Livescribe-Sky-WiFi-Smartpen-2Finally, there’s ASC 3191: Peer Mentoring, a pass/fail, 1-credit course with Dr. Laura Younger. Get training in peer mentoring and provide mentoring to fellow students. Students who take the course, and students who request mentoring, receive a Sky wifi smartpen, which records notes and audio together. Sky pens are amazing. Come by my office if you want to see how it works, or watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20Hgc_B4xuM

Reminder: Extended deadline for spring break trip. Please have your application essay to anthony.212@osu.edu by Dec. 1.

Spring Break Trip; spring course updates

We’re extending the deadline for applying for the spring break trip to D.C. in the hopes of attracting more freshmen. If you’re nervous about the research requirement, ask me or Jen Anthony for details. By research we simply mean that you plan so meaningful cultural or intellectual activity while you’re there and write a short paper after you return on your experiences.  Dr. Stephanie Brown, who is leading the trip, will give you all the guidance you need once in D.C. as far as transportation, etc. Typically students compare notes and go out in groups to explore. You won’t have to go it alone. For some examples of the types of research activities students do on these trips, check out the blog posts from last year’s trip to New Orleans: https://u.osu.edu/neworleans/

For spring: Dr David Ruderman (English Dept) is teaching a great 1-credit course on the Beat generation. In a couple of weeks we’ll open the class to non-Honors students, so sign up now if you’re interested:  Consider adding it to your schedule: A&S 1102H: On The Road With the Beat Generation (1 credit). D.B. Ruderman. Tue 5:00-7:15 PM (7 week course, 1/13-2/24). Study the “Beats,” a utopian collection of writers, including Jack Kerouac.

Also, this course should be available within a day or so in Buckeye Link: History 2204H: Modern European History. Dr. Gleb Tsipursky. TR 3:55-5:15 PM. GE: historical study.
