Thanks to all of you who could make the Honors dinner Friday night. My apologies for the locked buildings, which cut short the scavenger hunt (Security apparently didn’t get the memo). I do hope you all got your Honors mug from the lounge.
Interested in volunteer work and a free lunch? Those who came met Chris Ramsey, the owner of Sparta, a restaurant in downtown Newark that is part of a larger nonprofit called Project Main Street. Project Main Street hosts a number of initiatives intended to revitalize downtown Newark: community gardens, training programs, and more. Chris has invited you to have lunch at Sparta to learn more about these initiatives. If you’re interested, email me or comment below. The Honors budget will pay for your meal (just don’t go too crazy) if you show up at Sparta on this Monday, Sept. 15 between 1:00-2:00 or Thursday, Sept. 18, between 1:00-2:00. If those days/times don’t work, we’ll find other dates.
Here’s a preview of the service projects Chris would like student help with; comment if one or more sounds of particular interest:
*Sparta dinner fundraiser: Work (as a group) at Sparta for a day, serving meals; all proceeds will go to support Project Main Street projects.
*Home repair and clean-up: Help restore two homes on Mt. Vernon Avenue for use as housing for single mothers (clean windows, do yardwork, etc)
*Plan a Newark film festival: Coordinate an event in April showcasing community-area films.
I think all sound interesting especially the home repair and clean-up & planning a film festival 😀
Also, I can’t make it to either of the lunches. I have class both days.
Meshva, we’ll fill you in on what we find out.
