Justin Cook Module 7 Blog post

SO here it is the final blog post for this class. I will go over some of the more influential parts of this class and I will talk about the skills i have learned to help me in the future with online learning. I would first like to start off that my opinion of online learning has changed over the past 7 weeks and it has changed for the better. When i started this class I thought there was no way you could learn well and have the full learning experience over the computer. I was kinda right but also very wrong at the same time. You can have interpersonal relationships in online classes you just really have to work on them. So now on to the the online tools that I have added to my arsenal for upcoming classes. One of the online tools that I found and fell in love with is the Purdue Owl. I really do enjoy this website for many reasons. I believe that citation is the most important tool to help you with school. After you have learned how to cite all that information you’ve found you can use direct quotes, mentioning studies performed, and add to your work in the future. I think that the Purdue owl is the best of these citing websites because of where it comes from, The university of Purdue. Now, what this class has given to me other than tools to use online is the confidence in my self to know that I can do it. I have learned that if i sacrifice and discipline my self I can be organized. For me to be organized would be great! Thats what I used to tell my self. I used to ask questions like where do i start or what should i buy to help me. I now have the tools and the knowledge to know how to go about that. The most meaning full experience in this whole course had to be going through the resources online and learning how to create a blog. I really didnt know google like i thought I did. After we did the module on online tools and we watched the videos on google I found out how to better use google scholar. Google scholar is an amazing tool. I can use this to find articles written about the subject im searching for. The search engine wont just bring up all the article but you can see the amount of times used and viewed so you can trust your source. Also the other tools we can use to study. We have a website where you can use flash cards to help you study material. How I will Apply this class in the future is really simple and very easy to do. I will schedule my time better and use the tools i have been given in this class to better study and prepare for a class. If I do this and work on the disciplines we learned i feel as though the sky is the limit for me in school.

Module 6 Review ( Justin Cook)

I know i say this a lot my fellow bloggers but this module had a lot of great information that can be used in and out of the classroom. Evauluating a source wether in a business setting or family arguement even a class room paper is deffinately a must. The tools we learned this week will help evaluate the sources you select and also keep you out of trouble in your classes. If you check the last time your source was updated, especially on the internet, this will keep the information you use up to date and keep you from using out dated sources. Another tip I learned was checking how easily editable your primary sources are. If you check to see that your sources can be editited by anyone then you know that some of your information could be off and wrong. I also know that using this information is important for college because using false information in a power point or even in a resouce paper could be deterimental. If you are found to even use plagerized work in a source that doesnt let you know that about where the information comes from you could be in a lot of trouble.

Justin Cook Blog post module 6 Reviewing a cite

http://stats.nba.com/?PlayerOrTeam=Player&StatCategory=Points&GameScope=Playoffs

I am currently writing a paper comparing the two all star basket ball players, LeBron and Michael Jordan. I used this cite a lot to help me find factual information. This cite fits all the criteria for a good source. The source is created by the league in which the two players played. This source is also edited daily by experts in the field. This source is also view and used by other expert anylasits who would use this as a source and would notice problems.

Justin Cook (Reflection on Module 5)

This module was one that can be really helpful to students who are not avid note takers. The websites given to us during this module really breaks down one of the key components of being a student. Being an active listener was a big thing I took away from this website. Writing, making eye contact, and listening to tone all are apart of active listening. I think taking notes even when notes are already printed for you is a really important thing to do as well. Though I did not find something on the website that talked about this( though I didn’t really look hard for it) I believe that you learn from repetition and connection. When you write your own notes its proven you will remember more than highlighting a packet. Your brain is an amazing tool, even if you dont have a topic memorized your brain still has the information in there when you write your own notes. When rereading through your old notes you will start to recognize things and even remember specific things your teacher had said. You can also compare the notes to the one handed out in class. I also wanted to rant on specific styles of notes. I think while taking notes in class you should be as organized as possible with out sacrificing material. When you spend more time organizing your notes in class than actually writing them that’s not a good learning strategy. Reviewing your notes after you’ve written them and organizing them then would be more helpful.

VIDEO! Justin Cook

This video is a review on micro and macro economics. The first thing that he talks about is the circular flow of income. The circular flow income is a concept that needs to be understood before you can learn any other graph or more complex concepts. I like how he takes the chart and breaks it down in to manageable chunks. He looks at the hard concepts with easy language. He talks about how the demand curve is equal to the marginal benefit curve and the supply curve is the marginal cost curve. This carries over into trying to find balance and finding a MB=MC or supply equals demand which is fundamental stuff.

This video helped me last year for last minute review before my AP testing. As he spoke I used my knowlege to reexplain the material in my own words. also I compared my drawing of the circular flow of income to his to make sure I was still on the write page.

Justin Cook Module 4

This module was full of great learning and studying techniques. I need to turn some of these skills into habits. The amount of material retained from taking active notes and rewriting your notes is substantially higher. I was told about these practices over and over again in high school, but it wasnt until I fell in love with economics that I actually took the advice. I did a post grad year at western reserve academy in Hudson Ohio which is top five academic schools in the country. I was enrolled in the hardest class with the hardest teacher. The first day of class I was hooked. I loved the subject and the teacher. He told us to reread the class notes and to look up key terms that night and always be ready for a pop quiz. After reading for and hour and reviewing the class notes I aced my test but more importantly i realized the importance of the habit I was creating. I did very well in the class and in the first semester I received the second highest grade and was very happy and had no anxiety. The second semester was a different story. I got really comfortable and stopped putting in all of the effort. My grade took a severe turn downwards and I need to get back into the habit of good note taking and being very active in my learning here at Ohio State

Justin Cook Managing Your Time

This week has been a hectic week. Ive driven near 900 miles and been up before 5am 3 time. One thing that would of made my week a whole lot easier would of been better time management. One of our assignments this week was to chart out exactly how we spend our time. I noticed I spent a lot of time hanging out with my friends in the room. I had way better things to do but instead I felt the need to talk story with them. Talking story with your friends is important but is it suppose to take up more than half of my waking hours? The simple answer is no. So I need to put more effort into my time management and implement the use of calendars, the ten minute rule, the eliminating all distractions rule, and setting achievable goals. I kinda swung for the fences on the first pitch, I bit off way more than I could chew. Okay I had to much on my plate. That’s enough with the metaphors!! basically I set my self up for failure. Ive never been one to be organized and I told my self I was going to change immediately and become a robot. Bad idea. This was actually something we were warned about. Set reasonable goals and work towards something. Know that your going to fail a time or two but if the goal means enough to you then you will fight to become better despite the loss of the junk your cutting out of your life. When I want to becomes I need to, and when I will turns into I wont stop till its done, then you will become truly successful. Not dead, Wont quit.
