hand pointing to health icons on a computer monitorIn June 2021, the Office of Responsible Research Practices, Wexner Medical Center Compliance and Integrity, Wexner Medical Center Information Technology and Security, and the Office of the Chief Information Officer, Enterprise Security, offered a session on the new university HIPAA policy. The webinar materials are now available on the web; answers to questions submitted by attendees will be answered in a forthcoming post.

Webinar Objectives & Session Materials

The hour-long session introduced the new university-wide HIPAA and Protected Health Information policy and helped attendees:

  • Understand how the new university policy applies to research
  • Define “Research Health Information (RHI)” and identify appropriate security protections
  • List the mechanisms by which HIPAA-protected data (PHI) may be disclosed as RHI for research purposes
  • Apply these concepts to real-world examples of research

All session materials can be also accessed from our Past Educational Sessions page (arranged in reverse chronological order).

Where can I find additional resources?

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has developed a webpage of resources related to the new policy and the use of PHI for research purposes. The page also includes general FAQs on the policy.

Webinar attendees submitted a number of questions to the session facilitators. We are in the process of compiling the responses from appropriate subject matter experts from across the university. Stay tuned for a future blog post with the full Q&A!

In the meantime, if you have questions about how to store and protect health-related research data, we encourage you to reach out to your departmental IT security contacts for guidance.
