Five Questions with Joni Barnard

Joni BarnardAfter 12 years as a Quality Improvement Specialist for Education and Outreach in the Office of Responsible Research Practices, Joni Barnard retired in April 2020. In this edition of Five Questions, Joni reflects on her time supporting the Social and Behavioral Sciences research community.

Joni began her career in the corporate sphere, where she worked for over 20 years in management, training, and development. During this time, she continued her education earning a master’s degree in adult education and a doctorate in human resource development. She accepted a faculty position in Kansas and taught courses in training and development and adult education. Although she loved teaching, she and her husband John missed the culture and diversity of Columbus. So, in 2008 she accepted a newly created position in ORRP to work with SBS staff and students and to build faculty relationships across campus.

What have you enjoyed most in your role in ORRP?

Teaching is truly my passion, and I was fortunate that ORRP leadership allowed me the opportunity to work closely with students and faculty.

What has been the most significant change in Ohio State’s human research protection program?

I don’t think there is one defining change. Overall, though, I would say there has been a definite culture shift in becoming more customer service-oriented and providing additional flexibility to our research community whenever possible.

What is a lasting memory you have of working with ORRP staff?

As you age, you experience more challenging life events, and you go through these with your work family. When John was very sick, my team made it possible for me to work some from home. This meant they had to bring my work to my house or to the hospital as we were still on paper! Very kind!

What are some thoughts for those new to our office/work?

The learning curve is steep. Be patient with yourself. Ask many questions. You have the support and benefit of working with many smart people.  Don’t sweat the small stuff. Laugh often and loudly – the office is too quiet!

What are you looking forward to in retirement?

We are looking forward to spending more time at our condo in South Carolina. We love the beach. We look forward to spending more time with family. I will be reading many books!

Editor’s note: Joni was the primary ORRP contact for many members of our SBS research community. Questions may be directed to current ORRP staff as follows:
