Curriculum

The curriculum at the College of Nursing is comprised of four main types of classes: prerequisites, Nursing major courses, General Education courses, and electives.

Prerequisite courses   are required coursework for the BSN application.  These courses are designed to provide an educational baseline to set students up for success in the BSN coursework if offered admission to the program.  Many new students will take mainly prerequisite courses for their first academic year.  Transfer students that have completed some or all of their prerequisite courses are able to add General Education courses or elective courses to their schedule to reach their desired number of credit hours.

There are several course options available for many of the prerequisite course requirements.  For example, students may enroll in one of several different options to complete their Physiology prerequisite requirement.  Students must select which course to take from these options based on their preference and course availability.  Students should consider the following when deciding which option to select:

  • preferred learning style
  • mode of delivery (distance learning, distance enhanced, in person)
  • timing of course offering, for example some courses may only be offered early in the morning
  • whether a student meets the prerequisites for entry into a course

Nursing major courses are courses that are required for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  These courses can only be completed once a student has been offered admission to the BSN.  These courses include a combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences.  For more information on the required Nursing coursework you can visit this page.

The General Education Curriculum is designed to add to a student’s educational experience and provide knowledge and skills outside of their major coursework.  Students are able to choose from a selection of courses that fulfill these required categories.

Electives are courses that do not fulfill a specific degree requirement, but count toward a student’s total number of credit hours needed for graduation.

Individual schedules will vary between students.  Please consult with your academic advisor if you have questions about registration or how to fulfill degree requirements.
