Seminar Class

Seminar Class

Every Wednesday at 4:10 we would meet with the head of the Biological Sciences Scholars program Melissa Bassford to discuss ways to make the most out of the scholars program, college life, and everything that is expected from us as ambassadors for the Biological Sciences Scholars program and The Ohio State University. This 55 minute class helped prepare us for the years to come by laying a firm foundation.

Global Awareness: The summer of my second year, I am very interested in studying abroad in a a French or Spanish speaking country and completely immersing myself in another country as well as another language. The best way to better understand another culture is to talk and positively interact with people of that culture and learn how they think and the reasoning behind certain customs or beliefs.

Original Inquiry: As a person with Arnold Chiari Malformation Type 1, I would like to see more research of less invasive treatment for symptoms of this neurological malformation.  I am unsure that I could possibly accomplish this goal during my undergraduate time here at The Ohio State University, but I look forward to any possibilities that could possibly direct me in this direction.
Academic Enrichment: The neuroscience major I am currently in has an 88% acceptance rate into medical school. Although this was a big factor in choosing The Ohio State University, it was not the only factor. I am more intrigued by the level of knowledge of the professors here. My chemistry professor wrote our textbook. All of my professors push me and my classmates to be the best versions of ourselves.
Leadership Development: I am currently the Diversity and Inclusion Chair for my hall council and am interested in more leadership roles on campus. For example, I would like to be on the executive board of my Biological Science Scholars as well as an ambassador for my neuroscience major.
Service Engagement: Through the various clubs and activities I am involved in on campus, I most definitely will participate in volunteering on campus and the surrounding area. I have already participated in the Ohio State Welcome Leaders program as well as Community Commitment. Both programs were equally enriching regardless if I was on or off campus.

On October 18th, 2016 a few other scholars and myself met with the head of the Biological Science Scholars program, Melissa Bassford, to discuss the benefits of having a minor and how it could positively impact our career goals. She encouraged us to choose a minor that directly reflect our interests. Personally, I love history and I was delighted to find there was a medical humanities minor. After reading through the exhaustive list of the minors available here at The Ohio State University, I encourage every student to consider a minor in a subject they are passionate about.

About Me

Taken the first time I visited The Ohio State University!

Taken the first time I visited The Ohio State University!

My name is Mariaam Conrad and I am a freshman at the magnificent Ohio State University. Currently, I am a neuroscience major as well as a biological science scholar who has a great interest in being a doctor in the medical field. I try to be as active on and off campus as my schedule allows. For instance, I am an office assistant in my dorm complex, I am the Diversity & Inclusion Chair for my hall council, and I am also a hospitality minister for my church, St. Thomas More. As I explore my new environment I will document it all on this blog!
