About Me

My name is Harrshavasan Congivaram and I am currently part of both the Eminence program and Biomedical Sciences major. I was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and spent my elementary school years in India before coming to the U.S. I attended Hudson High School in Ohio before I came to continue my academic career at OSU.

Working with the elderly, in particular, some of whom suffer from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, has directed me toward research concerning dementia. I am currently an undergraduate assistant in the Kuret Lab, which focuses on understanding tau protein dynamics in Alzheimer’s. In the lab, I am being mentored by two MD/Ph.D. students who are both exploring the neuroprotective application of chaperone proteins in preventing/reversing tau aggregation. This semester, I have been given my own project, which focuses on using Bayesian Reconstruction to find Causal Key Drivers that are critical to Alzheimer’s. Once we obtain our Key Driver gene, we will test the abnormal expression train in cellular and animal models.

My other major involvement is co-founding Vocalize Columbus, which is a nonprofit dedicated to providing free clinics with affordable interpretation services. I currently serve as the Cheif Administrative Officer and a member of the executive board. My time with Vocalize has given me a more detailed understanding of racial inequities in medicine. For a greater experience in systemic healthcare, I have accepted an internship with the Charitable Healthcare Network, which oversees free clinic operation and advocacy in Ohio. This opportunity has let me observe the legislative effect on healthcare and the level of financial strain that Free Clinic is under.

I also got my first official job this semester as a Physician’s Care Associate (PCA) with Ohio-at-Home. As a PCA I will be assisting individuals with developmental disabilities in the execution of their Individual Support Plan (ISP), which is a list of goals that a disabled individual has put forth for him/their/herself. I am very excited about this opportunity, as patient interactions are scarce due to COVID-19.

During my free time, I love to play tennis and ping-pong. I am currently part of the Scarlet team for OSU’s club tennis program. I also enjoy exploring various parts of Columbus, especially the dynamic food scene.
