- Global Awareness: Currently, I am taking Mandarin Chinese and plan to minor in it. Using that skill, I hope to work abroad in the legal field doing human rights projects. This interest was sparked when I played on the Chinese National ultimate frisbee team in 2018. During that trip, my eyes were opened to a new culture; specifically, I observed a new expectation of women through the way people behaved, dressed, and spoke. Moreover, I want to experience this culture first hand by living and working in China, further expanding my global perspective.
- Original Inquiry: As an undergraduate, I want to engage in research with a political science faculty member. I want to explore women’s and minority issues, and how they relate to politics.
- Academic Enrichment: After graduating, I plan to go to law school. And with a law degree, I will work as a lawyer on social justice related issues. I believe my political science major will help with this transition to law school by giving an enhanced perspective on judicial processes. Additionally, my general education courses will be chosen because of their social justice element when possible. Through my coursework, I am committed to learning more about other minority groups in order to better understand these underserved groups. Moreover, I believe that it shouldn’t be the duty of these groups to teach the public more about themselves, but rather everyone should take it upon themselves to learn more. And I hope to echo this sentiment through my undergraduate work.
- Leadership Development: Throughout high school, I played ultimate frisbee competitively. On many of the teams I played for, I was elected captain with the responsibility of leading the team on and off the field. I am continuing with ultimate at OSU. Throughout my life, sport has empowered me to become a confident and strong woman in a world that tells me I am not.
- Service Engagement: I have done and plan to continue coaching ultimate frisbee youth teams as a way to give back to the community. Additionally, I am planning to do volunteer work with the ACLU throughout my academic career here.
