Context Presentation week 13-Daniel Garate

This week, we will read a short book called A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid. I would like to focus on the first section on how the tourist were treated and the things that we’re happening in the island do to the corruption that was happening there. The most people describe the tourist as ugly and fat but in the same reason thoughts as a hypothetical tourist in Antigua. The island is full of people that are poor and have the circumstances of living a sheltered from the harsher realities of the lives of those who must live there. Most tourist come visit this island because they want to escape their normal life and want something that is different from their daily life. Going into the good part is most of their cars in the island are terrible with a lot of problems to deal with, but at the same time there are expensive automobile like Japaneses cars in the island. Even while given the tour of the island you could see most of mansions they have there. mostly gained through corruption or outright criminality.  The island has a lot of current events that happen, for example they have holidays and festivals that show how proud they are of their culture, most parties can’t even be louder or lager than their carnivals or festivals they’re pretty stricken on that.  But its so weird how most of these tourist find amusing how their most people that live in poverty they find it amusing.  visiting this island sure most be an experience because of the density, also the amount of racism there is in this island is crazy most of Antigua to England and, especially, to English culture, mostly because of the history they have.

  1. Hey Daniel! I think this post is interesting due to the fact that it gives us a chance to think about places we’ve been (out of the country or not) and remember the differences that they may have from our hometown and that we should always focus on what we have / what they have and be respectful towards them. Good presentation!

  2. Hi Daniel,
I really enjoyed reading your presentation! I thought it was interesting to see how Antigua is different from what tourists see because of the corruption that it was built on and I also did not know that corruption was a major part of the island history. Awesome presentation!
